Letter from Maj Gaines on Surrender Near Silady
Transcribed from the Prcayune dated February 16 1847 with Maj Gaines writing from Las Luis Porast Mexico after leaving Saltillo and Agua Nueva. He recounts reconnaissance toward Silado, meeting 40 Arkansas cavalry under Maj Borland, and the enemy estimate of 3000 at Salado. After dark storms and no guide they return, are surrounded at dawn, decide to surrender with 56 men and six officers, 20 rounds each, and receive liberal prisoner terms. Santa Anna appears during retreat and promises fair treatment and eventual transport to Mexico City.
