The Illinois Republican state convention in Peoria selected Yates as its preferred gubernatorial nominee after a tense balloting sequence. Amid chaotic scenes and shifting allegiances, Morgan county deputies displayed a Yates banner, Lorimer and Haney backed Yates, and Reeves supporters protested. Final party officers and the ticket, including Northcutt and Hoss, were chosen as the convention adjourned until the next session.
In Washington on May 10 the Senate met in secret to discuss the Pearson election in North Carolina and Asheville. The majority report claims bribery and intimidation invalidated the Asheville vote, while the minority denies these claims. No decisive action was taken.
How ard, identified by Culton and others as the man who likely fired the shot killing Goebel, gave himself up in Frankfort Kentucky on Thursday night. He was taken into custody by Sheriff Meverly White of Clay County and John G. White of Winchester. Howard claimed he was innocent and would surrender if needed, insisting he was never at the state house square the day after Goebel’s death and could prove his absence with testimony.
Damaging gales along the coasts report four vessels lost near Leba with crew drowned aboard. Bremen Kiel and Flensburg reports tally fishing smacks lost and several lives.
The fictional People's Party convention opens at 2 PM in a large tent on the hilltop in Browns Falls. Gov. Lee of South Dakota voices welcome with cheers, praising southern republics while references to William Jennings Bryan spark strong applause. Officers and committees are named as delegates settle in, with the afternoon devoted to singing by a regiment and credentials being reported.

The convention voted to seat full votes for each state and chose Col W L Peek of Georgia as chairman and former Gov Waite of Colorado as vice chairman. Wharton Barker of Pennsylvania was noted as a participant.
At 1118 p m the convention adjourned until eight this morning with plans to wind up business today. Howard of Alabama is likely to head the ticket with a tentative running mate. Deaver declined the vice presidency, Donnelly possible. Resolutions point to a new greenback platform favoring government issued paper currency and direct legislation. Government ownership of railroads and telegraphs expected as major planks.
Mrs Johnson wife of a Royal eateries maker accuses Mistah Johnsine of starting a fire last Friday night in a Row house woodshed. She says she will pursue legal action while the case is investigated this afternoon. They married at Adrian and are living in town.
Calhoun county faces a jail quarantine as Nawed Smith of Battle Creek is held on vagrancy charges and diagnosed by doctors as a mild case of smallpox. The sheriff and deputies, with 20 inmates, were vaccinated and the jail fumigated. Health officials seek expert confirmation, with investigations and a council meeting planned to prevent spread.
A larger attendance marked the Albion festival second day with pleasant weather. The Sriedheim piano rental featured as the main afternoon event with a whimsical program that held all in thrall. Heawens received two encores while Violinist Vi th others performed solos and quartets. The closing act, Uhaydli's eC tian by the Ghowal Gate, was set for tonight.
The ladies of the W. O. TP. U. met Wednesday afternoon with Mrs F Stuart for a regular business session. Mrs Powell reported on the county convention at Ceresco in May. Mrs Wagner led with scripture and prayer, Mrs Boughton led the closing musical prayer, and Master Lee Borough sang a fine solo. Special dispatch from London reports General Lord Roberts defeated the Boers at the Zand river. Boer forces retreated in good order, with large losses noted. The victory comes as forces of the republics withdraw under pressure.

On May 10 a suburban car near the Tapist sanitarium was manned by workers when shots were fired into a crowd, fatally wounding Frank Lebrecht. Dan Donovan was arrested for firing the fatal shot. A dynamite cartridge later exploded on a Meremac Heights line car, cracking an axle, but no one was hit. The second day of the railway strike remained quiet with police guarding routes as both sides held firm, preparations made for potential escalations, and efforts to recruit motormen in Cleveland.
New York May 10 Robert W Wetzel a middle aged man jumped from the Brooklyn Bridge Wednesday. He was the third jumper in three weeks. Police onlookers saw him leap from the railing near the center of the span and he was picked up and rushed to a hospital in semiconscious condition. He gave his name with difficulty and later lapsed back, his clothing torn and shoes nearly torn from his feet. A truck driver Griffin carried the jumper toward the bridge as the crowd pressed for aid.
