Herndon Hotel Sold to Percy for Modern Makeover

The Herndon hotel, idle for years, was auctioned to R G Percy of Battle Creek for 859005. He plans to convert it into a first class hotel with extensive repairs, a white glass front, passenger elevator, water works on every floor, a cement walk around the building, and a thorough modernization to render it Michigan’s best hotel of its size.

Caught in Elevator Accident at Sanitarium

Ray Blackett of Battle Creek suffered a painful accident Monday at the sanitarium when he jerked an elevator rope to raise it from the basement. He became stuck between the door and the elevator frame, abdomen and lower back pinched, for about 20 minutes before rescuers tore away the door casing and freed him. He received medical aid and is resting comfortably.

Finley Arrested Over After Hours Saloon Charge

James Finley proprietor of the Vestibu le saloon was arrested on a warrant by Overcomstock for keeping the saloon open after legal closing time Tuesday night. His examination is set for Monday in Judge Merrill's court and he plans to waive and take the case to the circuit court. He denies any business after 10 o'clock. This marks the first prosecution by the new reform administration and its impact on future actions.

Still Grinding as Mains Case Advances in Court

The session resumed Tuesday after a Friday adjournment caused by Attorney Stevenson’s father’s death. Hulbert’s testimony ended, Dygertava z testified next, claiming Mavis hired him to shadow Hulbert on November 18. Dygert is Adam Arnold’s nephew and previously testified in the Arnold Irmerder case. Barkworth and Clark, opposing counsel, handled cross and direct examinations respectively. The trial shows no immediate end in sight.

Accident at Hotel Albion Injures Electric Superintendent

Stanter G. Allen superintendent of Albion Electric Light Works was adjusting lights at Hotel Albion when he touched an insulated live wire and was knocked from a ladder. He struck his head on the tool, was unconscious, and remains in serious condition with feared severe brain concussion though injuries from the contact were slight.

Arbor Day Exercises Highlight Marshall School Programs

Arbor day and Marshall day were celebrated by combined programs in the public schools Friday. The high school and eighth grade planted ivy at the Central building with the class of 87 adding a tree. The high school program included piano solos, recitations, and vocal selections by several students. A local drunk charge was heard before the justice, with courtroom humor reflecting the mood of a small town.

Family Quarrel Ends in Deadly Fight Between Brothers

A long standing feud led to Watkins and his brother-in-law Gething clashing with clubs in a yard altercation in South Uattle Creek. Watkins suffered six scalp wounds a skull fracture a dislocated jaw and a deep temple gash and remains in precarious condition. Gething also injured claims self defense. The dispute began over a claimed fish net theft amid an old personal enmity.

Local Field Day At Marshall High This Saturday

Marshall High School’s athletic association schedules local field day at the fair grounds on Saturday Marg. Candidates for athletic honors may compete and the top three in each event form a track team to represent the school at the county field day in Albion. Admission is 14 cents with grand stand free. Meanwhile farmer B Huyler from out of county was robbed of sixty dollars by Battle Creek postmen Saturday night.

Local report from Clarence describes a dispute between William Sebastian and El Hoedelmayr. Sebastian accuses Hoedelmayr of striking him with a stone during a quarrel, a confrontation that left Sebastian injured and unclear who initiated the incident. Both men reside in Clarence Square.

Battle Creek Stone Crusher Recovered By Bellevue

After a disputed sale to a Bellevue man, Battle Creek residents found the stone crusher moved to a nearby kiln by volunteers led by Tom Dempsey. By morning it was en route back toward Battle Creek, with the town reclaiming the machine.

Willoughby Charges Man With Assault Over Woman

Willoughby of Lee swore out a warrant for Grovinger on assault and battery after a confrontation described as sparked by a divorce and alleged alienation of his wife’s affections. Willoughby says Grovinger’s wife drew a revolver and fired, then Grovinger attacked. Grovinger was arrested after a warrant issued by Justice Merris.

Tragic Head Shot in Store Sparks Accusations

Wesley Berger, a bell boy at Wire Heavis House in Buble Greek, was killed with a revolver Wednesday evening. Bowee Hibbant, who was with him, claims he left to fetch a drink and found Berger dead with a bullet wound. A smoking revolver lay nearby and Hibbard says he returned the weapon to the desk and called for help.
