Tea Garden School Aims to Train Colored Youth in South
A plan by Dr Charles Shepard on a seven hundred acre plantation in South Carolina combines scientific and ethical training with manual work. After a decade of experiments, tea can be grown in the cotton belt. The school acts as a tuition-free center for elementary study and tea leaf picking, paying young workers by the pound to foster self-support and civic usefulness.
