End of First Day in Pittsburgh Strike Between Unions and Steel Firms
On July 2 Pittsburgh reports the first day of a strike between the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel and Tin Workers and the American Sheet Steel and American Steel Hoop companies, part of United States Steel. Most union and nonunion plants idle as officials predict 35,000 to 40,000 workers could be affected. If no settlement, a nationwide strike could ensue, potentially involving hundreds of thousands. Early July will see many plants shut for rest after months of steady work.
