Lynching of Fred Alexander Shocks Leavenworth Crowd
A mob in Leavenworth outdrew the sheriff and burned Fred Alexander, an African American accused of a November murder. The crowd toppled jail doors, dragged him to a stake, and burned him as officials failed to prevent the lynching. Gov. Stanley denounces the act and calls for restoration of the death penalty.
