Adam Kent and Joseph Engine, trapped hundreds of feet below the surface in the Lake Erie waterworks tunnel, were rescued and taken to Huron Street Hospital in Cleveland. They described hours of darkness gas fatigue and hope before rescue by foreman Van Dusen and workers who followed air pipe signals. The pair expected death by starvation or suffocation, then were hauled to the surface by rope and aided by a stronger companion.
The Marshall Common Council votes to issue forty thousand dollars in bonds for electric light and water plant repairs and bond refunds. An election is set for August 2, 1901, with ballots asking to approve loans of forty thousand dollars for improvements and bond payments.
