Mowry Wins Fifty Mile Mustang Race on Bay District Course
The fifty mile Bay District mustang race drew $500 a side with ten horses per rider. Mowry and J P Smith rode. Smith was injured by a kick after the tenth mile. Mowry held a late lead and won by about a quarter of a mile as he rode superior horses and changed swiftly. Mowry plans to visit Philadelphia with California horses to challenge any rider in long distance events.

Krupp Gun Carrier Heads to Philadelphia
The notable Krupp Works cannon from Essen passed Osnabruck on February 21 en route to Philadelphia. Weighing 100000 pounds the bore rests on two eight wheel platform cars while the attachments ride on twelve and six wheel cars. A single charge uses 300 pounds of powder. Remarkable five year old escapes mill pond crash
A Gus Rink's son slipped into Coralville mill pond and was drawn into a head gate and flume ten feet under water. He traveled 150 feet through the underground flume past three water wheels and emerged at the lower end under the paper mill three quarters of an hour later, hanging to a post uninjured.
