Ernest Eugene Wallace, son of Mr and Mrs Leroy Wallace, has been awarded a four year teaching scholarship. A 1966 high school graduate, he will attend Eastern Illinois University at Charleston to major in math along with speech physical education and history.
The First Baptist Church hosts Red Bandana Day on Sunday September 18. Sunday school starts at 9 30 a m and all attendees receive a large red bandana. The morning worship will be broadcast over Radio WKZI Casey with the message titled Global Lenses. The public is invited.
Charles R. Jordan, 19, Route 3, Paris, died in a Saturday night single vehicle crash off Route One north of Marshall. Discovered Sunday afternoon by two youths on bicycles, the car flew eighty feet off an embankment, fell sixty feet into a dry creek bottom and overturned multiple times. Jordan died of a skull fracture. the only road damage was a broken wooden post and chipped bridge edge.
The Clark County Republican Women’s Club will host a pot luck supper at the American Legion in Martinsville on Thursday September 22 at 6 30 PM A twenty minute film on the Two party System will be shown and Wayne S Jones will speak State and county candidates will attend Miss Emma Carpenter is a patient in Union Hospital
The Church of God in Newman Illinois hosted the July 16 1966 candlelight ceremony for Charlotte Hillard and Justin Black. Rev Richard Fisher officiated as family and friends attended a reception at the church basement with music and a three tier cake. The couple reside at 812 Archer Avenue Marshall.
Thomas Poorman, a well known local farmer, was fatally injured when his automobile overturned near Prairieton Saturday evening. The frost of Friday night damaged some vegetables though most corn is safe. A fire of unknown origin destroyed the Central Lumber Company at Casey around 6 PM Sunday, with a loss of about 20000 dollars. East Main Street paving nears completion to 11th Street. one block on South Seventh Street to be paved today.
Marriage licenses listed for Adbert Paul Myers and Mabel L. Fasig in Martinsville. Glenn Williams and Helen H. Fritch of Martinsville and Fullerton, California respectively. Marshall couple Aaron and Edith Kammacher announce son Frederick born last Thursday. Edith Madden as former name. Marriage notice: Opal Elston of Chicago wed Earl W. Wood of Sidell on Thursday September 16. Further licenses: Ervin Coleman and Cleo Lee, both Casey residents. Robert Thompson of Auburn Township and Opal Martin of Marshall.
Thirty years ago in 1936 two Marshall couples obtained marriage licenses Leslie Clapp a 33 and Pearl Maggart 35 William Lowe 21 and Genevieve Howard 18. The Daly family of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania welcomed a son with Mrs Daly the former Gertrudee Cole of Marshall. Frank Mitchell departed for Indianapolis to enter Indiana State College dental program while George Mitchell headed to Washington DC to join George Washington University.
Twenty years ago Grant Pritchard died at Union Hospital Terre Haute last Saturday. Births include Janet Sue Huffington born September 9 at Union Hospital, a son Robert Wayne Lee born Sunday, a daughter to Mr and Mrs John Travioli at St Anthony Hospital, and the death of W W Ralston of Marshall at age 84 Saturday evening. Henry W Shaw and Lola Crumlin of Marshall obtained a marriage license at Vandalia on September 9.
Ten years ago news reports list Mr and Mrs William Griswold and relatives leaving for New Mexico. The family expected to settle in Aztec while another Griswold party visits Carlsbad. John Mixon returned from Germany for a 30 day leave to Florida before next posting in Topeka. Floyd Harold and Jennie Quillen with Ralph visited Potomac Illinois to see Rev Frank Minton.
Mike Shonk aged 19 from Annapolis died after his car collided head-on with a gravel truck west of Robinson in thick fog. He was trapped about an hour and died at Crawford Memorial Hospital two hours after the crash. Truck driver Ray Bush of Porterville was uninjured. Mrs Claude Fox remains a patient in Paris Hospital.
Marshall Community High School welcomes new enrollees in the Cooperative Office Occupations Program. The three dimensional program combines on the job training, in school instruction, and club activities to provide work experience over earning. Participants gain valuable skills toward future employment.
The Marshall Lions Club held a September 7 meeting chaired by Robert Guinnip. Basil Moore spoke on Will Rogers philosophy while recalling humor examples. Guests included Robert Chinlund and Charlie Yeoman. Guinnip announced committees, thanked Mill Creek Shed, and reported $965.23 earnings from racing programs and Clark County Fair lemonade. October was set as membership month with $12 dues covering six months.
Mrs Mary Lou Layne 58 of Taylorville Illinois wife of Harry Layne died unexpectedly Monday at home after a hospital stay for tests. Born April 13 1908 in Marshall she lived in Taylorville 21 years worked as a secretary for Sangamon Company and belonged to Davis Memorial Christian Church. Survived by husband son William Layne brother Harry Davidson and sister Susan Stages. Funeral services were held at Shafer Funeral Home with Rev Charles A Day officiating burial in Oak Hill Cemetery.
A midnight collision on U S 40 about 20 miles west of Marshall involved a Mustang and a Kroger semi. Ronald Main and his wife Shari Diana, both of Tulsa Oklahoma, were en route to Washington DC for their vacation when the crash occurred. They suffered facial lacerations and were treated at Union Hospital. The Mustang was a total loss and the truck driver was uninjured. State police credited seat belt use for keeping them alive. A large list of visitors to the Burkybile home in Marshall is also reported.
The Future Business Leaders of America will hold their first meeting on Monday September 19. Officers for this year are President Lynn Med sker Vice-president Frank Vanoven Secretary Sally Douglas Treasurer Jackie Milburn Reporter Effie Boesiger. Dues are $1 for the year. New teachers in the Business Education department will be introduced. Monthly meetings will be on the third Monday. Sponsors are Mrs Flottman Mr Henie Mrs Hutchens and Miss Sprogue.

Rev and Mrs H J Kemp observed their 45th wedding anniversary on Friday September 2 at home in Marshall Route 1. Guests included Mrs Sarah McElravy of St Petersburg Florida and a long list of relatives and Martinsville Methodist Circuit church members. Refreshments followed with cake and ice cream and many gifts.
