Coach Phil Brown cancelled the football game with Garfield for Saturday after illness swept Marshall’s squad and players needed smallpox vaccination in Terre Haute. Marshall booster attendance and the team had counted on the matchup but the illness forced the cancellation unavoidable.
Mrs. Fannie Chamblin of Robinson died in an automobile crash on the new pavement near West York Sunday. Her husband Bert and their three children were injured, along with Mrs. John Poorman and daughter Ruth of Terre Haute who sustained severe injuries. DeVérne Chamblin, 18, drove the Chamblins. I N Richart of Martinsville drove the other car. Poorman was treated at Union Hospital Terre Haute after Marshall and Terre Haute transport. The crash occurred as cars passed through a dust cloud from dirt on the road during the pavement opening Saturday night.

Carson Purdunn son of Mr and Mrs C A Purdunn and Illinois sophomore filled in for Red Grange in Urbana against DePauw scoring an early touchdown. He and Green starred as Zuppke’s team practiced with the second team attack contributing the lone score of the day.
Fire destroyed a barn a grain bin and another building Tuesday on the Black Hawk farm south of Terre Haute owned by Wm T Hollenbeck. Loss estimated at 3000 beyond insurance coverage.
Health board lifts smallpox ban this morning allowing public venues to reopen. City plans a Halloween program tonight with Chamber of Commerce band at 8 o’clock, parade formed at Sixth and Main, marching past the reviewing stand and around the square. Prizes include $2 for best unique costume and best disguise, plus $1 for second choice.
Henry A. Wallis, long associated with the Hippodrome theater business management, leaves Terre Haute on Monday to finalize arrangements with the S. W. Straus company of Indianapolis. He will stay in Indianapolis for two to three weeks then return to Terre Haute for personal sale duties, remaining connected with Citizens Trust Company as local agents for Straus.
The Clark County Ministerial Association will meet Monday at 2 p.m. at the Martinsville Methodist church. Rev. A. F. Niswonger of Westfield will read devotions, Rev. P. G. Batty of Martinsville will present a Pentecost study, and Rev. F. S. Taylor of Marshall will discuss the Sunday school's relation to morning service. The program ends with discussion and a business meeting.
Sergt. James L. Gard former Marshall resident died October 15 at Colon Isthmus of Panama. His funeral was held at the family home near Ernst and burial in Marshall cemetery. Gard, born January 1 1887, served nine years in the U S Army including World War I service in the Sandwich Islands and the canal zone. He belonged to G Company 14th U S Infantry and died of brain fever. Funeral services were conducted by the Marshall American Legion post in a strictly military manner.
Illinois readers are urged to vote yes for the $100 million road bond issue, with auto license fees covering principal and interest without direct taxes. Proponents cite conservative revenue estimates, substantial yearly surpluses, plus Federal Aid and growing license collections, as safeguards for funding road construction and maintenance.

The new pavement from Chicago to Lawrenceville is open from West Union to West York. The strip was opened Saturday night and a heavy frame caused one accident Sunday due to dust from the paving mixed with dirt left to cure.
