The Devil's Own A Romance at Old Fort Armstrong
In 1882 at Old Fort Armstrong Lieutenant Knox recalls a spring morning on Rock Island as he boards the Warrior to deliver confidential letters for governors and General Atkinson. He encounters Judge Beaucaire of Missouri and Joe Kirby among river travelers amid growing tensions with Black Hawk and Keokuk as frontier life tightens along the Mississippi.
