County court convened on Monday with numerous estate matters including appointment of executors, conservators, and sales of real estate to pay debts. W. F. Burkett named executor on bond of 4000, and debts settled. several estates filed reports, inventories, and final distributions.
The May 1 dedication drew crowds despite closed doors with Mayor Dever, Dr John Timothy Stone, and bishops among speakers. The $4.4 million structure rises 566 feet, houses stores and offices, and is funded by mortgage income with an expected annual giving of at least $100,000 for church extension.
The court appointed an executor on a $4000 bond with an adjustment day on the first Monday in December. In Mary C. Kilgore’s estate a petition to sell real estate to pay debts of $875.82 was granted after a $3000 bond. In Sarah C. Davis’s estate a petition to sell to pay debts of $6065.36 was granted. Ray Drummond was ordered to pay $5 per week for wife support. Arthur Cork’s estate petition to sell real estate to pay debts was granted with sale terms stated in the decree.
The Clark county teachers institute will meet at Marshall township high school Tuesday through Thursday with enrollment, talks by W P Deering, Mrs Olcott and others, plus evening and afternoon sessions. On Friday teachers travel to Charleston for the 27th annual Illinois State Teachers Association meeting.
Fred Abel and his family formerly of Marshall and son of Mathew Abel are in Tokyo, Japan where Abel serves as a missionary. They will take a furlough and will be in Spokane, Washington during that period.
The pavement on the road south between Marshall and Robinson was completed except for two grade sections near Robinson awaiting setting until next fall. The road should open about the first of November, giving the public pavement from Chicago to Lawrenceville.
The city council met for about thirty minutes on Monday night. After disputes over overdrafts of city funds and transferring money from the bond and interest fund to cover deficits, members approved bills and adjourned.
Public notice states banks will close for a one hour and sixteen minute period beginning at noon on Wednesday October 15 1924. Institutions involved include The Marshall State Bank and Dulaney National Bank.
L. J. Regan of Archibald Harris & Company Chicago arrived Wednesday to audit the books of all offices in the county courthouse. He expects to remain two to three weeks and may return later to complete the work.
J. W. Adams, secretary of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Company since 1908 with two years off, resigned Saturday. The board accepted the resignation with regret and appointed J. Snedeker as his successor. Adams seeks retirement due to age and plans a California winter. Under his leadership the company grew successfully.
Sunday school rally day in Marshall drew 780 attendees across all churches. Pastors hope to increase weekly turnout and build up numbers in each church throughout the revival effort.
George Ragon, the paper man, fainted Monday morning as he began his rounds and was confined to bed for the rest of the day. He is up now but has not returned to work this week.
A group of Wiley high school girls from Terre Haute were injured when their car rolled down a steep embankment five miles west of Terre Haute after leaving the Marshall Wiley game. Driver Miss Dorothy Nay and six passengers suffered slight bruises as a passing car forced brakes and a collision sent the vehicle down the incline. The group was taken to Terre Haute for treatment.
Margaret Off versus Eva Stover et al files a bill to quiet title. Martinsville State Bank sues William M A Ax and Annie Ax et al for foreclosure. Floyd Barbea as trustee sues C H Parker et al to cancel a lease.
A Detroit area writer extols northern Michigan's untouched woods, lakes, and hunting trails as a tonic for health and spirit. He contrasts simple frontier life with industrial society, praising honesty, hospitality, and the rugged outdoors while noting limited agriculture and ongoing cut‑over land. (Continued on last page)
Marshall football defeated Wiley 22 to 0 in front of the season’s largest crowd, breaking Wiley’s run against them. Captain Geisert and Kannamacher starred for Marshall with Claypool and Stewart contributing in the backfield. Officials named from Indianapolis and Terre Haute handled the game.
Bryant finished remodeling the upstairs rooms over the Marshall Battery Co. office and moved in with his family. The space is described as a modern five room apartment.
