At the Illinois Methodist Conference meeting Judge Hershel Snavely was named a trustee of Illinois Wesleyan University Bloomington. Springfield offers a $550000 endowment and an 80 acre campus if the university relocates there. Leslieeemany son of Mrs Susan Beeman Terre Haute died Sunday in Huntsville Alabama at age about 30. He had lived in Decatur recently and funeral services were held in Memphis.
County progress on Liberty Bond subscriptions remains slow with about 7 percent of the total quota raised. Marshall, Westfield, and Casey townships show some headway, but several districts have yet to report full subscriptions. The Martinsville bank district trails, whileHatton, Jackson, Kile, KokI, Darwin, Eckle, Fishback, Pleasant Hill, Possum Ridge, Sassafras, McClure, McKeen, Marshall, Melrose, and Washington district totals are listed among efforts toward the county goal.
A large crowd gathered at Vandalia station Wednesday night to view a war relief train from the Seventh Veterans Reserve Board. The three flat cars carried shells fuel and war paraphernalia while speakers including Henry R. Rathbone Randall Parrish and Judge Connelly addressed the crowd. The event promoted Liberty Loans with Lt. Lanoix and Private La Bourot in attendance. The exhibit was informative and drew many viewers before the train departed around midnight.
Spanish influenza sweeps the nation with 67 high school cases in Marshall leading to a partial school closure. City churches suspend services. watchman duties double with higher pay as a government policy trend. County Sunday School officers named for the coming year and Red Cross fund drive updates noted.
The local draft board issued a call for six men with grammar school education to report to Chicago University on October 16 for training as blacksmiths gunsmiths machinists and geographical draftsmen. A statewide call for 14 000 Illinois men for October 21 has been issued though quota details are not yet received. The board continues filling out questionnaires from the last registration to classify registrants.
Homer N Pearce died suddenly Sunday afternoon about 3 o clock from a stroke of apoplexy. He had a prior mild stroke ten days earlier but remained active. He was 43 years old and survived by three children. Funeral services were held from his father Dr Edward Pearce home and burial in Brick Cemetery in York Township.
Roy Miller died at home in Dolson township on October 1 1918 at age 64 years 10 months and 1 day. He married Bille Claypool on September 26 1878. they had a daughter Maude who died May 2 1918. Miller was a farmer and longtime Dolson M E church member. Surviving his wife mother granddaughter and other relatives, funeral conducted by G O Myers at Clarksville Baptist church. He was a respected Herald correspondent for over 26 years.
Marriage licensure records list Jonathan L. Ellington of Orange township and Lelia Mae Spittler of Martinsville township. Also noted are Leroy Swick of Holman and Marie in Westville Lode TM.
A letter from Capt. Stephen Bradley says he sailed last Saturday from San Francisco for a port in Siberia and expects to reach in November. The Walter Burdick Chapter D A R held its first meeting of the 1918 19 season in the courthouse Monday afternoon with Mrs. Harry Dulaney presiding. Mrs Edward Archat resigned as secretary and Mrs Truman Booth was elected to serve. A greeting card from Mrs Frank Robinson was read by Mrs Anna Baird. The chapter voted to buy a Fourth Liberty Bond. due to funds on hand, each member will pay their 1919 dues in advance.
Mrs Ethel Risinger of Martinsville township was declared insane by the county court on Wednesday and sent to the state hospital at Anna. A fuel inspector appointment was issued to George C Hallauer of Marshall by the U S Fuel Administration with authority to inspect any oil plant in Illinois. An amateur burglar known as Charles McDay was jailed for stealing clothes across the river from Darwin but released due to youth after returning the items. The Sunday driving ban held in Marshall with about 99 percent compliance and may continue a week or two.
The city council met briefly Monday night with Treasurer Greenough reporting a total fund balance of 313 448 and Collector Claypool noting electric and water collections of 874 and 283 dollars respectively. Light Superintendent Wallace said turning off porch lights saved a carload of coal last month and employees at water and light plants will receive ten days vacation annually or ten days extra pay if unused.
Transfers show numerous property moves including John Garver to Temple E Deaner and back, Dora Foletta to Ella Welch and Harvey H Evans to Elizabeth Cronk. Transactions involve parcels, outlets, and blocks with prices ranging from $1 to $22,714 across Marshall and surrounding lots.
The Daily Telegraph reports the death of Kimball Young at Long Beach with praise for his intellect humor and kindness. It mentions his sister Eilen S. Young his years at Hotel Virginia and University Club Chicago and notes other family bereavements and notices including Blanche Liffick and Elmer Huppert.
Seven war work groups met in Chicago to launch the United War Work campaign starting November 11. The drive aims to raise 10.6 million dollars nationally with Illinois quota at 12.74 million. Funds will be pooled into a common fund supporting Catholic War Council, YWCA, War Camp Community Service, Jewish Welfare Board, Salvation Army, and American Library Association. About 600 delegates attended. local plans divide the state into 22 districts and Cook County adopts a special method to handle population and interest conflicts.
