A Clark County calls for renewed Liberty Loan support with strong patriotism. The editor urges every resident to buy bonds, noting banks will lend at six percent and bonds cost about 1.75 yearly. The piece frames loan participation as civic duty and warns against slackers.
The report claims Bulgaria's surrender and Turkey's exit shrink the war in the west as Allied forces advance toward the Rhine. A Mrs Zane Arbuckle reports a hen laid an egg last Saturday bearing a perfect letter SA on the shell. The judges have assigned coming year court dates with Judge Marshall at Marshall in November 1918, Judge Brewer in March next, and Judge Partlow in July next.
Telegram cancels call for 46 men due to Spanish influenza outbreaks in training camps. The train with Allied war trophies arrives around 8:30 pm and will be placed on the Vandalia station sidetrack for viewing. Hon. Henry R. Rathbone and Judge Everett Connelly will lead the staging and tour.
Property transactions are listed including Gus Ritter selling east Plum Street to BF Johnson and buying vacated by Dr Stephen Bradley on West Main. Arthur Deaner exchanges 314 North Fifth Street for Roy Jeffords property at 105 North First Street. Melvin Behuser sells a 22 acre farm north of the city to F M Rhoads. Woman suffrage defeated by two votes, opposed mainly by the Democratic South. The November circuit court jury pool is named with numerous local residents. Draft lottery held. Gen Crowder says training to swell forces to 4 million will proceed, with October tests and rapid questionnaire completion urged.
The draft lottery first number drawn by President Wilson was 322 held by Roy Wells of Melrose. Among the first 100 numbers, 20 registrants in this county appear, including John Christine of Dennison and others across Martinsville Westfield Casey Marshall and Dennison. Local draft board reports 354 inducted and about 506 men started overall with volunteers.
New Red Cross member James Loren Kees Jr is highlighted as member of the week. Renewals listed include Edria Kees Hasson Hasson Hogue Mathews Ma thews Cork Allison Sweitzer Lake Lake Baird Baird and others. Belgian relief fund contributions shown include Grabenheimer Edith Shaw Anonymous Nichols and a sale of asters proceeds from Pike's Peak School District charity event.
Charles Low of the 303rd Ammunition Train writes home from France asking how soldiers who turned yellow to dodge the draft are judged. He suggests the stigma will follow those men for life.

The Clark county quota of 831000 dollars for Liberty Bonds purchases 831 sixteen inch shells or 1600 demolition bombs for German trenches and supply lines, or 6650 machine guns, framed as urging support to help make the world safer.
Zion and Emanuel churches announce Sunday school at 10:00 and 9:30 a.m. respectively with preaching at 11:00 a.m. Emanuel offers evening services at 7:30 p.m. through the week in a revival led by Pastor J. W. Feller. all are invited.
Word came of the death of Mrs. Carl Criss of Terre Haute a Red Cross nurse who sailed to France in July. She died from wounds suffered when her hospital was bombed by German forces. The piece notes wartime food and service themes as well.

Mrs. Walter Huston died instantly when the Huston car struck a Vandalia train near Irvington after the party returned from a theater. Wounds were reported for the remaining occupants. The incident prompted community concerns as government loan drives urge every property owner to buy Fourth Liberty Loan bonds and report nonparticipants.
Sidney Cox writing from France on Sept 4 describes field conditions with pup tents and limited blankets, boxcar journeys, and harsh nights. Lorena Melvinia Falbush born near Hanover Germany September 27 1833 died September 28 1918 aged 84. One. Married Robert Hensley in 1855. Surviving are Mary Shields Viola Pittenger Ruben Hensley John James Charles and 17 grandchildren and sister Meira Burkett. Joined M E church at 15 later at Centenary AB and Auburn churches. Funeral Monday at Auburn conducted by Rev H D Hudson with burial in Auburn cemetery.
