Too Many Scrubs by E H Walworth in Illinois livestock survey
The Illinois agricultural association and county farm bureaus report more grade sires used than purebred registered sires in six early counties. On 3878 farms there are 519 registered bulls versus 703 grade, 564 registered boars against 456 grades, 70 registered rams to 115 grades, and 85 stallions to 46 grades. If county trends hold, markets could rise for 11716 bulls 7600 boars 1916 rams and 766 stallions. Hog and cattle sales run through mid November with purebred breeders facing market pressures. Mumford notes high prices have shifted focus from purebreds. demand for improved purebreds remains strong to boost country livestock efficiency. Farmers who skip buying risk missing a great opportunity as county fair exhibitors plan to sell quality young boars.
