Glendale columnist reports a booming building boom with 400 residences started in 3 months and $2 million in new construction but notes a coal shortage and housing strain. The National Tractor and Implement Show drew nearly 100000 visitors, spurring plans for another show near Los Angeles.
Baseball game scheduled Sunday at West Union 2280 pa between Marshal and Winaton draws even odds. Report indicates two teams are pretty well matched and ready for the field.
Many ex service men have secured their Victory Medal applications through the local post and more should join the armistice day observance on November 11. Call to obtain an application soon and complete it. the medal is a valued keepsake, not a discharge button, now on exhibit in Doty’s window.
The county teachers annual meeting runs four days next week with a Tuesday dinner and social hour. Harold Bright outlines sessions led by Dr Jonathon Rigdon Lulu Hil and L W Ragland. The program includes enrollment opening exercises inspirational addresses sectional work and announcements each day.
Harding leads Cox in a straw vote conducted at Fred B. Keifer’s drug store and Rexall stores. Community tallies show 392 to 333 while state totals read 11 489 to 5 177 in favor of Harding.
Fr. L. Swinehart of Clinton A W McKeand of Terre Haute and others active in the Associated Advertising Clubs of the Wabash Valley will join a Marshall Chamber of Commerce supper at the Marshall House tomorrow night at 7 00.

Merrick Cox deeds land 13-11-12 to Edward C. Renner for 4,500 dollars. Robert P. McNary to Earl W. McNary, land 8-10-13 for 1.00. Gerrard transfers to Albert Stohrlot Casey for 3,500 dollars.

Progress through September 23 shows 203 miles of hard surfaced roads in Illinois with 35 miles on the Lincoln Highway 49 miles on the National Old Trails 72 miles on the Chicago St Louis Road and 1 mile on the Chicago Waukegan Road plus state aid work totaling 255 miles. Rain and equipment shortages slow National Old Trails Springfield St Louis road and other projects though 20 miles of grading and 15 bridges were contractually awarded since July 7 totaling about 2.88 million dollars.
The York township Sunday school convention meets in the Friends church West Union on Sunday October 10 with a 1:30 pm start. Omer Shawler leads devotional. L B Anderson discusses New Testament studies. J W Adams covers interchurch relations. James McMallom presides as president and Rush Dolson as secretary. Officers to be elected for the coming year and offerings for state and county work.
Deputy Sheriff Short brings John Wesley Jones from Terre Haute on a charge of abandoning his wife and child.
W W Ralston of the Pennsylvania lines in Marshall will attend a huge Terre Haute banquet for veterans of the St. Louis division. About 400 to 500 eligible workers—20 years or more with the system—may join a new veteran’s association formed at the event. A 4 pm business meeting precedes a 6 pm Hotel Deming banquet, with return trains planned after 8 pm.

James Hixon, detained in Marshall jail, traveled through Marshall on September 15. He sought a favor from Dr. A Mitchell, leading to a $1650 rain coat pledge at Grabenheimer's and a claim of $160 due from the Pennsylvania railroad in Terre Haute. Hixon was later involved in Terre Haute for forgery. Terre Haute police notified local authorities. He appeared before Squire Sweet and was bound over to the grand jury.
Albert Sockler loses Ford agency after refusing 48 Fordson tractor sales and moves to selling Overland and Willys Knight cars. He remains in his current building with only a change in car brands and no other business changes announced.
Governor Lowden designates next Saturday as Fire Prevention Day urging public gatherings to recall its importance. He cites twenty five thousand olives lost annually in the United States by fires with seventy six percent preventable.
Fire destroyed the Volney Mount farm home of Mr and Mrs Andrew Liffick two miles east of West Union on Sunday afternoon. All household goods were saved except the kitchen furniture. Local report indicates investigation pending.
City officials and the Vandalia railroad ordered seven lights at the station and three on the platform after long local agitation. The Marshall Chamber of Commerce aided the move and last night the city council approved the expenditure. The council also approved bearing half the cost to drain the low grounds near the Marshall Milk condensary. Building sidewalks was debated with wide bid variations, and the streets superintendent was named inspector of building work. The county jail was cut off from water after the board of supervisors refused to pay a bill over 100 dollars. Coal supply troubles were discussed as families lacked fuel, dealers scarce, and prices prohibitive for consumers.

Contractor Alan Parrish suspends paving for two weeks into spring but reports over half of the 29 mile Ridge Farm to Marshall stretch will be done by autumn. About 60 000 cubic feet of dirt will be dug at Big Creek Hill. Road to Marshall remains open in winter and Parrish aims to finish the 1 100 000 project by September.
Westfield will host a three day homecoming and horse and cattle show this fall. A town committee interviewed business leaders and residents and received strong support to proceed with the event. George Collins, W F Flenner, and L A Weeden were named general managers, with W. H. Drewel as president of the horse show and homecoming association.
A Sunday birthday dinner for Mrs Hawkins marked her seventh year with many relatives present. Attendees include Hawkins and Pratt families from West Union and Paris, plus Clarksville and Terre Haute connections. Mr and Mrs Hawkins were early Nickwoods district settlers, arriving from Kentucky in 1824.
