A state bulletin charges gross irregularities in Illinois assembly expense accounts and calls for tighter controls. It cites high per day costs for visiting committees, poor itemization, and questionable large fees including attorney expenses.
The Board of Local Improvements opened three bids for Pine street sewer and Twelfth street sewer projects. Benders of Topeka Indiana bid 1989.82 P O Leary of Terre Haute 1927.28 and Lloyd Pulver of Marshall 1900. Pulver won the contract though Robert Thompson a board member did not bid. Pulver had no prior known contracting history with such work.
Clark County and former county clerk William T. Martin Jr and his bondsmen Fidelity and Guarantee Co of Baltimore reached a $5075 full settlement for a $5651.20 shortage in his accounts. The county chose to accept the offer to avoid further trials. Special attorneys Connelly and Poorman were paid $500 and expenses totaled $8. Martin now works for a gas company near Tulsa Oklahoma.
The Big Four ditching crew renovates the right of way near here while trains tie up at night at Marshall.
A well brought in on the G. L. Walter farm just south of Robinson produced 75 barrels initially and is expected to reach 30 to 40 barrels daily. Located just east of the Skidmore gas wells, it supports belief in a promising new oil pool opening in the area.
Mrs. Robert R. Lynn died suddenly at her Grant Park home last Wednesday. The funeral was held at the Metz home in Marshall with Rev. N. E. Royer and Rev. E. G. Sandmeyer officiating. Interment followed in the city cemetery. Annie Laurie Metz, born March 16 1866 in Marshall, married Robert R. Lynn in 1884 and lived in Marshall Altamont and Grant Park. Surviving are eight children Ray Tracy Dan Walter Fred Jessie Marietta. sister Mrs. Htta Perdue. brother Charles Metz. parents and husband. She had joined Centenary United Brethren then the Methodist church.
Monday celebration for Aunt Hunice John and her descendants at W H Johnson home in Clarksville. Hugh John son turns 12 and Margaret Opal Arbogase aged 2 join the 80th birthday tribute with social gathering and gifts.
The Commissioner of Pensions and the U S Pension Bureau have obtained a one month paid leave for H C Bell. He and Mrs Bell sailed from Baltimore on the Merrimac and will visit Charleston Beaufort and Savannah before heading to Florida. The trip aims to restore his health.
The U. S. Vending Machine Co. of Marshall has reorganized. Mr. Martin, inventor, sold his interest and retired. New officers are George C. Hallouer president and general manager H. M. Dewey vice president R. A. Mitchell secretary C. D. Mitchell treasurer. The improved patent machine boosts output. factory runs at full capacity and orders exceed supply.
Harry Casteel writes from Gillette Wyoming about a wagon trip for coal. His dog chased a jack rabbit and vanished, then a large grey wolf appeared and charged. Casteel defended his dog with a whip, retreated to the wagon, and now carries a gun on longer drives.
Deputy Sheriff Barkley intervened when Cecil Martin and William Plew fought in Oliver over liquor fueled dispute. A loaded revolver flashed and clicked as Martin aimed at Plew, Barkley wrestled the weapon away, leaving Plew unharmed though scratched during the struggle. A shell showed signs of having been snapped.
C. B. Adams awaiting trial for forgery cut his throat and wrist with a pocket knife in a solitary cell. He received 19 stitches for a deep throat wound and severed windpipe, with doctors noting a possible chance of recovery. A farewell letter blamed his wife and ordered body delivery to his brother at Flat Rock.
The November term of the circuit court closed with several dispositions. The People v Asahel Bennett and Robert Statesman involved docking a horse. Ray Manuel received parole violation sentencing to the state reformatory. Horace Vint and Horace Smotherman were noted for stealing an automobile. Clark County v William Schmoyer debt was dismissed by plaintiff. John R. Dancy v Big Four Ry trespass resulted in judgment for $6650 by agreement. First National Bank of Westfield v C C Hart et al foreclosure decree set at $786.
The People versus John West of Marshall resulted in a conviction for rape after testimony from 17 year old Ethel Burkholder. Evidence showed West, 57, had relations with the girl from about age 12 to 16. Judge Connelly presided. defense was by J. W. Graham and S. M. Scholfield. Jury imposed one year in the penitentiary.
The circuit court heard the divorce case of Henry Shanks versus Emma Jane Shanks with a question on how long a married woman may sit on cemetery steps. The jury, after a brief deliberation, returned a verdict in favor of the plaintiff, Henry Shanks, as reported by the Paris News.
A Monday morning fire at the United Brethren church in Casey sent smoke from south and east windows. Water and foam limited damage to floors above and below the furnace room. interior refinishing required. Loss covered by insurance. Repair contract awarded for 3000 dollars yesterday.
On Monday Esquire Thomas Craig wed Dewey Williford and Bonnie B Cooper of Wabash township and John Hart and Flossie J Johnson of Crawford county. Yesterday he joined Harry Beasley and Stella Shawver of Parker township.

A 22 year old woman died in Terre Finite after receiving a pin wound to the arm. The incident occurred Thursday, with authorities reporting the cause as the pin injury.
The Casey papers claimed the Liberty Bell would not stop before Terre Haute and urged supporters to travel there, while Marshall was arranged to be a stop. The writers deny Marshall’s significance and call the stance contemptible and silly.

Crowds of about two thousand gathered Sunday afternoon to see the Liberty Bell as it returned to Philadelphia after a likely final cross continental tour. The bell, carried in a special car at the rear of a special train, drew school children D A R members Boy Scouts and Marshall Band musicians, amid patriotic remarks and reflections on its historic role from the 1762 inscription proclaiming liberty.
A club named The Chuck Hole Club is formed in California to improve dangerous road holes along the line of the National Disgrace. Members wear a small spade and carry a shovel to fill holes temporarily and report them to authorities.
