Napoleon B. Whitcomb, aged about 78, died yesterday morning at his home after about a year with pneumonia. Born in 1844 in Ohio, he moved to Canada at 14 and lived in the area since then. He was the youngest Civil War veteran in the vicinity and is survived by his wife H. P. Lackey and one daughter, Mes A. B. Christike. funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Mrs James Burkett of Anderson township was found dead in her home last Wednesday. Coroner Haslitt declared death due to apoplexy. Born Lydia May Coons in Clark county on May 23, 1866, she married James W. Burkett on March 18, 1888 and they had nine children, seven living. Survived by her father John M. Coons, five sisters, seven brothers, and one grandchild. Funeral by Rev J L Buyer with interment at Auburn cemetery.

Death of Mary Reynolds in Effingham Hospital
Mary H. Reynolds died Monday in a hospital at Effingham after an abdominal rupture operation. The 46 year old Douglas township native was married to McKernon, later divorced, and had one son who died in infancy. She had served as housekeeper for State's Attorney Jones for over twelve years. Funeral services were held at the Jones home with interment in Forsythe cemetery. Surviving sisters are Mrs. Rebecca Thompson of Missouri and Mrs. Elmeda Joab of Terra Haute, and brother Lee Reynolds of Cincinnati.

At a board meeting the rule allowed each teacher one day to visit other schools. Misses Gross and Ralston toured Indiana high schools with profitable results. This weekend staff plans to attend the state conference in Champaign so there will be no school Friday. Basketball practice starts soon and a boys league may form for non varsity players. Mr Castleman refereed Hutsonville versus Palestine with Hutsonville winning 29 to 25. Rev Sandmeyer spoke at the high school last Thursday morning. The rural teachers meeting at Mt Moriah drew patrons for Dr Stewart on soil fertility Saturday at 1 30 p m in the high school.

Death of Mrs Malinda Smith in this city
Mrs Malinda Smith died at her home after an extended illness caused by cancer. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church with Rev E G Sandmeyer officiating. She was born June 6 1848 in Stark County Ohio and married Edwin Smith in 1869. Six children survive Flozza Mollie Jessie Stella Harry and Burns with grandchildren Harry Ruttman and Burns Dixon Smith Jr and a daughter in law Mrs Hunice Smith. She united with the United Brethren and later the Methodist church and devotedly served in church work before her death.
