Knocks River Mission and Slavery Tangle on the River
In 1832 Lieutenant Knox travels from Fort Armstrong to St Louis aboard the Warrior. He meets Judge Beaucaire and Joe Kirby. Kirby and Carver scheme to seize Beaucaire’s plantation and slaves in a cheating poker game. Beaucaire dies. Knox is cast overboard. He survives with Pete the foretold “free nigger” and seeks safety with Amos Shrunk. Kirby’s faction murders Shrunk and Carver. Knox and Sam flee upriver aboard a keelboat, pursued by Kirby's men.
