A fierce storm wrecked the Baker residence collapsing the structure and tossing Mrs. Baker more than fifty feet to her likely death. Mr. Baker, though injured, crawled to a neighbor with help arriving to transfer him to care. Nearby, William Sloan’s house lost its roof in the same event as farm buildings suffered damage.
Widespread damage reported as a cyclone swept from the southwest through Clark County. Farms lost livestock and barns, corn fields were shattered, a house and barn were wrecked, and a well pump was lifted from its place. Telegraph and telephone lines suffered extensive outages as authorities tally thousands in damages.
Mrs Lucy Quick Prewett died at her home in Marshall on Monday evening November 11 from Brights disease. The community mourns her fourteen years of happy marriage to Robt Prewett and her devout Christian life. Funeral arrangements were not set, with services expected Friday.
Joe Forbeck fell twenty feet from scaffolding while working seven miles south of Marshall for Veram Lichtenberger. He was found unconscious with head and shoulder injuries, feared fatal at first, but later recovered without broken bones and is expected to sit up in a week. He is a popular local contractor and builder.
Representative C F Probst of Illinois Central Power Co met the city utilities committee to discuss a tentative offer to take over the Marshall light and power plant. The proposal would pay debts up to 10000 dollars in exchange for transferring light power and water franchises to the company. Probst claims the city would gain 24 hour service, improved manufacture power, and no local plant, with power delivered from Paris. The Herald urges careful public approval before any steps, keeping minds open until full details are submitted.
Special to Herald reports Clifford Turner’s residence on the Charles Burnside farm near the Hast Liberty school house was completely destroyed by fire on Monday afternoon. No one was home and the fire was not discovered in time to save contents. The loss is severe for Turner, newly married, with all household goods described as new. Origin of the fire remains unknown.
An ad claims "Protection that Protects" offering all classes of insurance at the lowest rates. It asserts every policy is backed by a "Million Dollar Company" and promises payouts. Mrs. Chas Smith hosts the Thimble Club and guests at her home tomorrow afternoon.
A fragmented ad lists hats priced at $1 08 and $83 00 with discounts on rimmed millinery and wool auto hoods and scarfs. It notes good road conditions and that reductions are best, with Combe offering similar lines.
