Local Herald reprints unrest over unions and Wilson policy

The Marshall Herald condemns violent union tactics and defends civil order while criticizing labor methods. It argues for a balanced view of unionism, notes national labor unrest, and questions Washington plans on Mexico. The piece also discusses Wilson administration policy in New Jersey and New York elections as a gauge of public support.

Military plan for rapid mobilization questioned

An Associated Press dispatch from Washington argues a six year study led to a plan to arm 609000 troops at moments notice. Critics doubt the plan’s readiness noting the Regular Army totals 1365000 across the U S and militia musters, with voluntaries to fill gaps.

The True Self and Politics Debate in America

A satirical riff from the Saturday Evening Post argues politics tires readers by blaming external forces for personal fault. It contends personal reform matters more than systemic change and imagines a modern evangelist with Roosevelts, Bryans, and Wilsons charisma urging individuals to fix themselves before addressing broader issues.

Voters split across parties in Tuesday elections

Returns show no clear boost for Woodrow Wilson in November as Democratic gains hinge on Republican divisions. In Massachusetts Walsh wins by over 60,000 while Gardner and Bird together outpoll him. New Jersey mirrors the split with a divided vote and Republican strength. An active Republican effort in New Jersey aims to secure a majority amid a Progressive challenge.

Mount Vernon Bank Robbed by Two Lookouts

Two robbers posed as lookouts during a Wednesday heist at Jefferson State Bank at 4 pm and fled with 1412. Dr. Andy Hall Conrad Schull and Fred Pa Went captured the fleeing robber, who refused to give his name. Officials say the robber forced staff into the vault, but the money was recovered moments later in the ensuing chase through downtown. The suspect, aided by the crowd, was soon arrested with a revolver drawn to deter the pursuing officers. The tale closes with an odd inserted ad story about Bucklen’s Arnica Salve and farm imagery.
