Washington, Oct 28. A wartime screed urges relentless punishment of Germany and warns against peace that spares the Hohenzollerns. The writer laments the memory of a child’s death and predicts political peril for Democrats if mercy wins.
Charles Figg once in Marshall and Terre Haute saloon business runs a soft drink place in Terre Haute now. Police raided his Sixth Street area after rumors of liquor sales. About 35 quarts of liquor found behind the bar and 60 pint bottles seized. Estimated value over 250 dollars. Federal inquiry possible as case continues.
Earl Metz Perdue died in Bartleside Oklahoma after illness linked to influenza typhoid fever and the fourth Liberty Loan campaign. He was 57 born February 5 1887 in Marshall and survived by four brothers Arlie Harry Ben Ted and sister Mary plus grandparents and many friends. A brief funeral at the cemetery was conducted by Rev P R Powers with burial Friday and employer funded expenses.
The Marshall Section will meet Saturday at 2 p.m. for the monthly program. William Moore of Oliver is notified of his son George Moore’s death in action on Sept 30 in France. Harry Downey, former Marshall post office clerk, is reported wounded and recovering in a French hospital.
The Clark county election yielded a sweeping Republican win with majorities between 200 and 450 for all candidates. Absentee ballots numbered about 60 under the new law. Orange and Parker townships supported Republicans as Harold Bright and Flem Black ran strong campaigns. John Shoemaker and Norman Bennett led Bright’s campaign, with Johnson townshipBacking Bright larger than four years ago.
The October draft of 65 men, canceled, is renewed for Nov 11 to 15 with 20 more called to Camp Wadsworth South Carolina. The 65 listed will go to Camp Greenleaf in Georgia. Read as printed, the roster includes many names with towns such as Martinsville Casey Dennison West Union Marshall and York. The Local Board has not yet selected the 20 additional volunteers and the list shows extensive regional participation.
A 28 quart whisky shipment addressed to Walter Smith was confiscated by Deputy State's Attorney Scholfield yesterday. It is held pending an investigation and thought linked to a bootlegging operation near the state line run by an unnamed associate.
Ralph Stepp youngest son of Mr and Mrs Charles Stepp died at home northwest of Marshall after a brief illness aged one year. Funeral services were at the family residence conducted by Rev Bert Eckel and he was buried in Marshall cemetery.
Emery E. Davis of Clarksville aged 35 died at home Monday afternoon from pneumonia after a grip attack. Funeral services will be held in Clarksville today. He is survived by his wife and two children.
A wartime drive unites seven major welfare organizations under one campaign led by President Wilson. The total goal is 170,500,000 with districts oversubscribed by 50 percent, including a 34,500 district quota within district 16 and 128,800 for the five-county district. Citizens are urged to contribute generously to support morale and aid for soldiers.
The November term of the circuit court opens next Monday with Judge Marshall presiding. The docket includes numerous chancery and divorce cases such as Lamb v Lamb and Stricker v Stricker, plus foreclosures and assumpsits. The death of Mrs James Noonan from influenza is noted with burial arranged in Bradford, Pa.
Dr Charles O. Highsmith of West Union is commissioned first lieutenant in the army medical corps. Wilfred Shaw is commissioned as ensign in the navy and has been stationed at Pelham Bay New York for weeks before arriving for a brief visit with his parents and sisters.
Mrs Nancy Graham died at her home near Clarksville on Monday from influenza. Funeral services will be conducted at the Clarksville Baptist church today. She was 65 years and 9 months old and is survived by her husband and three children.
Daniel Starkey son of Mr and Mrs Stephen Starkey died Friday at his home west of the city from influenza aged 21. Burial was the same day at Auburn since the family was ill. The Board of Review in the courthouse is open daily at 2 pm for soldiers overseas to receive Christmas boxes with labels. Local physicians note improvement in the grip situation with few new cases and most sick improving. Churches reopened last Sunday and schools on Monday.
