In 1832 Lieutenant Knox is sent from Fort Armstrong to St Louis and meets Judge Beaucaire and Joe Kirby the Devil's Own. Knox learns of Eloise and Rene, Beaucaire’s granddaughter, and the enslaved mother and daughter. Kirby and Carver scheme to cheat with a poker game, Beaucaire dies, Kirby and Carver steal away, Knox is thrown overboard and survives. He allies with Pete and abolitionist Amos Shrunk to hide the women and plan escape. Knocks later witnesses a tense exchange between Kirby and Rene at Beaucaire House.
