Deadly Illinois Tornado Strikes Mattoon and Charleston
Destructive tornado swept across central Illinois killing 54 in Mattoon and 34 in Charleston with hundreds injured. Destruction spread to Livingston and surrounding farms. Marshall Red Cross provided tents and aid as roofs and barns collapsed, trees uprooted, telegraph lines down, and a wide area left in desperate need of assistance.

Dr S W Weir of West Union has been named by Gov Lowden as the third member of the Clark county registration board. A forthcoming wedding is announced for John Rector of the city and Miss Mary Louise Frazier of Terre Haute with the ceremony slated next month. A skating rink in a tent near Hutsonville drew petitions from three churches and a village ordinance declared it a nuisance with fines up to 100 dollars per day. Mrs Mollie Rogers wife of James Rogers died in Paris of heart disease at 48 and funeral services were in Paris before burial in Auburn. she leaves a husband a daughter and several siblings.

Judge Snavely and States Attorney Clements traveled to East St Louis last Thursday for the county's suit against Sidell and Olney railway company over taxation. The county asserts taxes total about 3600 and the road argues the assessment is fraudulent and taxes amount to 20 percent of earnings. A temporary injunction blocked county treasurers in the counties along the road from collecting taxes until final hearing.

The Livingston area, built from 1830 by Robert Ferguson and later a trading point for pioneers, suffered extensive tornado damage. The historic Livingston Methodist Church and Masonic lodge were heavily damaged or destroyed, with few buildings likely to be rebuilt. the old tavern and cemetery predate the church, and revival plans are uncertain.

Death notices follow for Mrs Sarah McManus long time Douglas township resident aged seventy eight and for Vern Hornbrook forty four with post mortem citing an abscess in the nasal bone region. Funeral services were held for both.
