Record Breaking Auto Trip Aims For Transcontinental Record
Edwin G Baker and W F Sturm in a cross country auto journey from California to New York aimed at beating the transcontinental time record. They reported 409 miles covered on the first day with an average a bit over 340 miles daily, and only one puncture. The travelers appeared grease and dirt stained but hopeful as they pressed on Saturday.

Oil Well Fire Destroys Rig Near Casey In Cumberland County
Reading like old time notes from the oil fields. A well drilled on the Fred Knecht farm north of Casey reached 375 feet before a rapid rush of oil and gas blew the drill out and set the rig on fire. The blaze destroyed the apparatus. The same area near Crooked Creek township shows a potential shallow sand pool being opened near the Siggins pool. Vandalia Gas Co. reported a 200 barrel first day production from No 3 on the Richardson heirs farm. Dan D. Nolan, a veteran operator from Pennsylvania, has acquired the lease. The Arthur Brown No 3 in section 1 is described as a good gas well while the Noss No 4 on the O 5 Taylor farm is a productive hole.

A massive early morning blaze destroyed the Mercantile Establishments on the north side of the square. The Whiteside and Hughes stores suffered heavy losses with thousands in damage and insurance covering stock and building. Firemen contained the flames despite strong winds, and the origin remains unknown.

Horse Thieves Nabbing Horses Across County Jail
Sheriff Wallace reports a wave of alleged horse thefts this week with suspects in custody. Edward Howard, believed root of the Martinsville theft, confessed and waived examination before Esquire Cleaver. Jesse Carleton, from near Dennison, hired a horse to Terre Haute and was captured while attempting to sell the rig in West Terre Haute. He is jailed after pursuit from Marshall.

Sudden Death of Gustave Buehler Farm Neighbor
Gustave Buehler a well known farmer of Wabash township died suddenly Monday morning at his home southeast of the city. He had been in poor health but at the time appeared in his usual condition. He worked in the garden then collapsed in the house and died within minutes. He was 58, a Gibson county native, long time Clark county resident, survived by his wife and four children. Funeral at Zion Evangelical Church at 2 o'clock this afternoon conducted by Rev L J Ehrhardt.

Dangerous Monday Blaze Destroys McFarling Home
A major fire damaged the residence of G. McFarling on East Main Street. Drunken Driver Pleads Guilty in County Court
McKinley Casey pleaded guilty to driving an unlawful manner in the county court on Thursday. He was fined six dollars with costs totaling twenty eight dollars and twenty five cents. He and a companion drove from Terre Haute in an automobile while badly intoxicated and wrecked the car on a bridge near Martinsville.

A long circulating tale that farm hand Tom Givens was killed and buried on the Kramer farm was proved unfounded when State's Attorney Jones Sheriff Wallace Coroner Haslitt and Deputy Clerk Gallagher searched the property last Friday. No body or grave was found.

Death of a Pioneer Hammerly near Ernst
John Baptist Hammerly born June 24 1824 near Stuttgart Germany died May 12 1915 near Ernst after moving to Ross county Ohio and Clark county later. He married Lucy Ann Noel in 1857 and lived on the same farm 58 years. He joined the Congregational church at Marshall but later ceased attending after losing sight. He survived by three children William van Hammerly Mary R Marbaugh Elizabeth Blockinger and five grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday at the home east of Ernst conducted by Rev L J Ehrhardt with interment in Marshall cemetery.
