Umberto Torrino, Italy's 22 year old heavyweight, 6 feet 2, 235 pounds, boxing two and a half years with ten opponents knocked out in four rounds or less, resurfaces as a formidable foe for Tunney. He is gifted musically, may revive ancient cestus fighting, and embodies a legendary athlete profile.
Prof B F Holscher superintendent of schools learns his son Harry Holscher a University of Illinois student earned membership in the honors day convocation group. The Fourth Annual Honors Day Convocation will be held in University Auditorium Friday May 18 1928 at ten oclock with addresses broadcast by WRM.
A. W. Dittmore of Terre Haute bought the barbecue west of Marshall and Taylor Hice. He plans tourist cabins on the site and says Mrs. Dittmore will manage them. The barbecue will be remodeled.
Graduation exercises for Marshall grade schools will be held at 8:00 p m at the Methodist church. Rev R G Bristol of the Congregational Church will give the commencement address. William Beels Frank Keehns and Chas Pyeatt all of St Louis Mo were arrested Monday night and charged with petit larceny after an attempted tire patch sale and staged hold up at a Standard Oil station sheriff Coldren later arrested them. In court Tuesday they pleaded guilty and received one year each at the Minors State Penal farm in Vandalia.
J. C. Brydon of Martinsville was named chairman of the Group Six meeting of the Illinois Bankers Association held at Catlin. The session drew nearly 300 bankers from Clark Vermilion Champaign Cumberland Douglas Gales Edgar and Jasper counties. Brydon, retiring secretary and treasurer, led the gathering.
Miss Ida Mae Boteta of Pensacola and Glen Ritter son of Mr and Mrs Gustave Ritter of Marshall were united in marriage at Brewton Alabama on Tuesday May 8. They left Brewton after the ceremony for Marshall and will visit there before returning to Pensacola to make their home. Ritter has ten more months of Navy service and is a member of the band stationed at Pensacola.
Miss Dorothea Fishback married Fred Schaefer Saturday at 8 p m in a ceremony at the bride’s parents’ home south of Marshall. Rev D A Kroft of the Evangelical church officiated. The groom is the son of Mr and Mrs William Schaefer of Ernst. The newlyweds are currently living with the bride’s parents.

James Cole 21 of Terre Haute weds Faynie Mitchell 18 of Terre Haute. Garland M. Wolfe 21 of Sullivan to Dorothy L. Faulk 18 of Linton. Florice A. Lawson 22 of Vincennes to Laura Reitmeyer 18 of Vincennes.

Prof EB H Taylor and Coach CP Lantz of Charleston Normal School were in Marshall on Monday for official business.

About 160 members and guests attended guest night at the Masonic Temple Monday. After the meeting a short program followed with dances by Etta Mae Mitchell and Dorothy Machlan, songs by Caslon Bennett, a reading by Martha Spangler, a duet by Rex Cork and Wilbur Clark, and a tap dance by Ellamae Mitchell.
On Monday evening May 21 at 7 30 the Public Speaking and Domestic Science departments will present demonstrations of their year’s work. James C. Farmer leads public speaking with Ettamae Mitchell Dean Findley Margaret Buckner Nina Kammacher Frances Ferris and Paul Shepler presenting talks. A fashion show by Domestic Science under Miss Pauline Jones follows the talks.
In the New York County Court estate of James A Hartman a petition to buy a monument was granted by written order. In the James McCollum estate bond and oath filed. Joseph McCollum relinquishes his right to administer and asks H. H. White be appointed administrator with will annexed. Oath and bond approved. In the Ernest Medsker estate inventory is filed and approved.
A birthday dinner honored Mrs. Jacob Beuhler for her 90th birthday at the Beuhler home south of Marshall. Attendees included three children, 12 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild, plus friends and relatives from Terre Haute Hamburg Cincinnati Metcalf Evansville and Chicago. Rev. William Beuhler attended with his wife while Rev. Ben Beuhler was ill.
The Marshall Township High School Senior class selected its four act comedy cast for And Billy Disappeared. Cast includes Robert Morris Dean Findley Frank Casteel Leland Baker Owen Hall Imogene Coryell Marie McDaniel Helen Jane Smith Louise Foley Mildred Craig Josephine Bitel. Wilbur Clark assists mechanically. Performance planned Tuesday night May 29 at 8 at the Pythian Theatre.
Miss Marguerite Collins of Gary won Miss Gary and will compete for Miss Indiana after a four day beauty contest in Gary. Miss Helen Feasel, Emerson high school student and Marshall granddaughter, finished second by a close vote from 20 judges.
Norman Bennett's Oakland sedan was brought back to Marshall on Wednesday morning after being found near Indianapolis. The car had been stolen Tuesday night May 1 when a man forced Gaslon Bennett at gunpoint to drive him a distance north of Marshall. Caslon was released to walk home.
The Wabash Valley Telephone Company office has been repapered and updated with other changes completed last Monday and Tuesday.
Glenn Welsh sold the National Cafe to Mrs Luella Weaver on Thursday May 10 and she took immediate possession to continue the business as before.
Dixon C A acquired Cole Bros Hardware Store from owners last Friday. Dixon took possession Saturday morning and began operating the business.
The first annual Girls Day was staged Saturday at Marshall Township High School under Miss Kermit Cochran. Winners: baseball Freshmen and Seniors. tennis Louise Foley. volleyball Freshmen. track and field Jane McClure Nina Kammacher Morene Coryell Nellie Kearns Vivian Turner. archery Helen Lichtenberger Mary Jane Davidson Mary Garver. The gym program featured mimetic drill sailor dance solo dance Danish three tap dance and oxen dance.
