A reader recalls the 1886 Geo Powers murder at Marshall crossing and the long unresolved case. The letter links local war news, frontier patrols, and a shadowy suspect aided by anecdotal testimony and unproven details.
Rev T V Nidey reports details of a deadly tornado that wrecked their home near Lamar Colorado. He describes waking to heavy hail and wind, a house collapse, injuries to his wife and others, the recovery of his father and mother, and the family receiving aid as they plan to rebuild.
Last Thursday night thieves struck multiple downtown businesses. John Lowe hardware was broken into stealing chisels pliers flashlights and knives. John Whiteside dry goods lost a traveling bag shoes shirts socks and more while a safe was attempted. Fred Keifer drug store and Cole Bros hardware were entered but yielded little or nothing. Gorham Bazaar and Casteel drug store were also targeted but not entered. No clues have been found.
James M Doherty a former Marshall resident living in Terre Haute shot himself last Thursday night, likely due to worry over illness after a recent operation. The 51 year old, once a top life insurance solicitor, died from a self inflicted shot wound to the right temple. survivors include his wife three sons and a daughter.
Daniel Jefferson Layton born August 18 1834 died April 27 1914. He enlisted August 7 1861 served through December 31 1863 reenlisted January 1 1864 discharged July 17 1865. Married October 1 1863 to Rohanna Spencer. Eight children four of whom survived him. Survived by wife three sons James T Edward Frederick two daughters Alice J Emma six grandchildren two sisters and one brother. He joined the M P church years ago and lived a Christian life. Funeral at the church conducted by Rev B S Billings then buried York cemetery.
At dawn outside West Terre Haute John Demetro a Brazilian Gypsy killed his wife and two men including Bob Riska and Joe Riska with a rifle amid a drunken spree. He resisted arrest before being jailed. authorities cite weeks of quarrels and liquor fueling the crime.
Mrs Hauline Cline a former Marshall resident and half sister of Emanuel Leseure died in Wakefield Michigan from heart disease. She was 40 and survived by one son. The body was brought to Marshall on Saturday and buried in the city cemetery.
The new city council at first meeting names T Lloyd to serve as city marshal and street commissioner. A $1 reconnection fee for removed electrical meters is approved. The annual treasurer's report shows May 1 1913 balance 9490 46.

A Royal Neighbors of America chapter was instituted last evening in the Woodmen's hall with 26 members. The West Union chapter led by state organizer Mrs. Nora Edwards conducted the work, Mrs. C. M. Sullins elected Oracle, and Mrs. Melvin Behner chosen Secretary. Refreshments followed.

The Grand Army Post met last evening and voted to invite Rev C Perrin to deliver the Decoration Day address and Rev E G Sandmeyer to give the Memorial Sunday sermon. Citizens are expected to organize the observance details.
Terre Haute adjourns Roberts case for an hour so the defendant can attend the Central League inaugural at the ball park. Sam Hutchinson, Republican of Darwin township, named rural mail carrier from Casey, effective May 16. Crude oil drops five cents to $1.20 per barrel, down 25 cents in three weeks. Martinsville residents Wm. H. Eirhart and Lulu Rupp. Terre Haute residents John Jeffers and Pearl Caldwell noted. Casey boy John Schiver, small, injures arm in fall from a horse.
Smallpox in Toledo grows alarming with no deaths but many severe cases and over fifty under quarantine. Paris reports a dozen or more cases as authorities work to contain the spread.
George Taubeneck reports that after electric light meters were installed the city's coal bill fell about 50 percent. The plant, however, earns nothing because 25 percent of the current is lost in old transformers and lines and about half the remaining supply is furnished free.
A state civil service commission member will be at the court house next Saturday to examine applicants for the county superintendent of highways for Clark and Wabash counties.
The school board plans to keep Professor L. W. Williams at the helm of the high school, with Harnish Sloan Davison stepping into other roles. The idea of hiring one man for both city and high school posts has been dropped for now, despite public approval.

Rev Mr Zeigler of St Louis has accepted the pastorate of the Congregational church here and will begin work June 1. Mr and Mrs Zeigler were in the city Monday to arrange their move.
Advanced notice shows railroad fares increasing in all directions. From Marshall to Terre Haute the rise is modest while Indianapolis and St Louis see larger jumps. Overall charges are several cents higher, with some routes up about fifty cents or more.
The Marshall Cornet Band presents its first over air concert of the season on the streets tomorrow evening at 7 30. The band numbers 32 players and a fine program has been arranged.
Mrs. Telitha H. Hart, paroled by the Vigo county court months ago on a shoplifting charge, violated parole by traveling to Westfield. She was arrested there Monday and returned to Terre Haute.
The Marshall ball club played its first game at Casey Park last Sunday and defeated Casey by 10 to 8 in an interesting contest.
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. William Melton of Westfield on April 14. This is Mrs. Melton’s eighth child, and she is 36 years old.
