A severe storm in Terre Haute caused widespread destruction on Easter Sunday night. It tore through the city center damaging 300 homes and several large factories, with fires following the winds. Dozens were injured and at least several people were killed, prompting a city relief effort and millions in property losses.
Mingar gets 1600 in circuit court for 10000 damages sought against the state board of agriculture over injuries from the grandstand collapse at the state fairgrounds. Judge Scholfield ruled the board is a corporation capable of suit. The case may go to the supreme court. Other cases disposed: Wilson vs Kimlin demurrer sustained. Davis divorce dismissed. The Oil Belt Traction Cost Switch company filed a mortgage in the Charleston to Mt. Carmel region to secure $2,500,000 in gold bonds with Dearborn Trust and Savings Bank of Chicago as mortgagee. Last Sunday in Marshall marked a rare birthday as Grandma Allison turned 86 on Easter. Born March 23, 1827, she married 68 years ago. her husband has long since passed. Nathaniel Godden died Sunday afternoon at his Plum Street home after a long illness from complications. Born November 28 1839 in Indiana he married Nancy Kennedy in 1861 and had eight children four survived. He served in an Indiana regiment during the Civil War and lived in Marshall about 26 years. He joined the United Brethren church in early married life. Funeral services were at the family residence conducted by Rev. Chas Em Taylor with interment in the city cemetery.
Senator John R. Hamilton of Mattoon, a Republican, was declared legally entitled to his seat by the Senate on Thursday by a 38 to 0 vote. The contest filed by John Irvin of Tuscola was dismissed following the committee on elections recommendation.
