Neal A. Hollenbeck president of the Marshall Chamber of Commerce announces L. Borden Dé Forest manager of the Illinois State Chamber of Commerce service department will be guest speaker at the organization meeting next Monday night March 16 at 8:00 oclock.
Mr De Forest is a noted speaker on chambers of commerce and civic development. The piece traces his Chicago area roots, early business career, Navy service, and 30 years as Elgin Association of Commerce executive. It highlights civic projects and leadership in regional business organization.
The March grand jury met at the Court House and was sworn in. It was busy from Monday into Tuesday noon. Fourteen indictments were returned including John Britain reckless homicide Ormal Lyle Chapman forgery Donald Lee Fields Richard Pegg grand larceny John Buntair leaving scene of accident Alfred Lucky forgery Virgil Parker contributing to delinquency Virgil Parker statutory rape Virgil Parker indecent liberties James Clouse grand larceny habitual criminal Charles R Maxwell Carl Stewart grand larceny Fred Remlinger and Jack Remlinger grand larceny Alfred Lucky forgery.
Otto Craig, a Pennsylvania railroad employee from Martinsville, was struck and killed at a hilltop crossing on Route 40 near the tank farm. The Kansas Station veterinarian driving the other car caused the fatal crash, with the body taken to Markwell Funeral Home in Casey for an inquest. He is survived by his widow.
Rev I E Vanney and his wife from Marshall were en route to Mattoon for a meeting when a car pulled from a filling station and struck their vehicle on Route 122 south of Mattoon. Mrs Vanney suffered a compound fracture of the left leg below the knee. Rev Vanney had minor injuries. They were taken to Mattoon Hospital. he was discharged Wednesday and she will stay about three weeks.
Marshall's new factory building will start when weather allows with $26,100 underwritten to date. The public is invited to a Chamber of Commerce meeting at 8:00 p.m. Monday March 16 at the American Legion Home to discuss the project. Applicants for positions should mail letters to Formalite Inc P O Box 270 Marshall Illinois.
The Women's Society of Christian Service will meet at 7 30 tonight at 704 South Sixth Street the home of Mrs R A Mitchell. Mrs Walter Edens leads the devotional and Mrs George T Mitchell presents the program with hostesses Mrs Edith Wagner Mrs Mary Miller Mrs Paul Arney and Mrs R A Mitchell assisting.
Ge Arnold Bohn aged 20 of West Anton and Frances Lucile Kuehner aged 18 of Dennison obtained a marriage license. The filing lists both parties as the intending spouses and records their ages and hometowns.
People of Cooper Chapel plan a fox drive tomorrow starting at 9 00 a m meeting at the church. Only shotguns will be used.
De Forest becomes manager of the organizations service department and adviser to about 500 local groups. He also serves as secretary of the Education Committee and oversees the agriculture Industry Relations program. He studied in Chicago area schools and Yale University, earning a BA and resides in Rigin with two daughters pursuing higher education.
Judge Robert F. Cotton presided at the Marshall circuit court opening Monday for the March sessions. The grand jury was sworn and began work as cases including divorces Volk v Volk to hear March 28. Several defendants pled guilty and sought probation. various officers were appointed to investigate and report on cases of grand larceny and forgery, with motions to quash indictments granted in one instance.
Lydia Weller aged 83 died Saturday at Dunkel Nursing Home. Funeral services were held in Beards town Illinois after transfer from Marrs Funeral Home. Also deceased is Mrs Lee of Marshall Indiana who died Thursday at 9 00 am. Survived by four sons and four daughters with siblings and extended family listed. Burial and further arrangements pending at Moore Funeral Home.
A fire broke out around 9:00 PM Thursday in the bathroom of Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Davidson at 503 Poplar Street Marshall causing floor damage and extensive smoke damage throughout the residence.
Mr. and Mrs. Homer B. Curry of Tucson announce the birth of a daughter Virginia Louise at St Marys Hospital on March 4. Mrs. Curry was formerly Margaret Kuhn. Mr. and Mrs. Lester Litteral of Shreveport announce a son William Frederick born March 9 at the base hospital in Shreveport weighing 7 pounds 10 ounces. This is their first child. Mr. Litteral is in the Air Force stationed at Shreveport. The mother is the former Lucille Mae Koppler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Koppler of Marshall.
John Pentecost and Jessie transfer to Wallace and Ruth Paul in Dulaney’s fifth addition Casey by warranty deed dated February 21 1953 for $1. Otto Cooley and Sadie Cooley convey lots 5 and 6 block 1 original Cumberland to G L Ferrin and Carrie Ferrin by warranty deed dated March 6 1953 for $2. U S by James K Polk grants patent to Rachel Stout dated April 1 1848 for land in section 36 township 10 range 13.
In 1903 a group of Bere County farmers will meet in Marshall on Saturday to discuss building telephone lines south from the city. The lines would connect with the Farmer's Line switchboard in Marshall. M A Huffington, who sold his Anderson farm, bought 192 acres in Wabash known as the Joe Welsh farm for 6500 dollars and will have his son move onto the property. Burglars pried open Grant Pritchard's west window and stole 8 to 10 watches and several revolvers. Fred Keifer's house also was entered, with 20 cents in money taken. R H Brown and W W Hogue of the Condensery Company traveled to Terre Haute to buy a safe for company books. Dessie Howell returned from Kansas relatives with Ira E B Nay and wife visiting. John Spotts moved into the old Kramer place with improvements made.
Marriage licenses issued for Emory Vanfleet and Glenn Brown both of Melrose and Anderson Simmons with Anna Maud Lovell of Marshall. Mrs Gertrude Machlan hosted a six oclock dinner with guests Mattie Faelish Lillian Machlan Jean Fawley and Fred Bubeck. Civil service exam took 22 entrants with Earl Perdue as examiner. Bess Craig and James Dukes of Terre Haute visited Marshall. Harry L Snyder of Terre Haute plans a hotel and summer resort on Nine Mile Island with ferry service on the Darwin road. Amanda Underwood Rogers widow of Franklin Rogers died March 9 leaving three children Clarence E Charles C and Mary E Rankins. West Union to vote on incorporation at upcoming election.
Mr and Mrs Catlin Chapman announce the birth of a daughter born Wednesday March 7. A soybean and sweet clover day was held Thursday at the Casey.
New case in circuit court Harry D. Huey versus Mary Alma Huey for divorce is filed. A second annual high school event by Clark county agricultural and household science clubs with the farm bureau was a success. Parker Davison killed a 2.5 foot brown striped snake, the largest in years. A bond issue of 100,009,000 tied to state license fees and road extensions through Oasey and Westfield was approved by the county board.
In Marshall 1933 marriage licenses were issued to Woodford Spitt ler and Barbara Fitzgarrald. A story and a half house owned by Mr. and Mrs. George Morgan on Beech street burned Monday morning. Mrs. Mary J. Macke, 76, died at her daughter’s home in Paris after lingering illness. Russell Smith and Geraldine Mitchell wed February 14 in Waterloo Indiana, former Marshall residents. True Garwood announces the arrival of a baby girl Mary born Monday.
Ten years ago marriage licenses listed David A Free man 65 of Marshall and Olive Alma Mulls 49 of Marshall. Earl Edward Brown 18 of Dennison and Hannah Mae Holmes 16 of Den. March snow and cold were noted. Anne Coldren reported for training at Hunter College March 25. Virginia Hurst traveled to Tulsa to visit relatives. W W Weatherman and Isabelle Bubeck welcomed a baby boy William Edward. John Hornbrook of Westfield visited son J R Hornbrook.
Mrs. W Guthrie Piersel of Springfield Illinois will speak Sunday evening at 7 at the First Methodist church in Marshall. She will show Japanese costumes and Kodachrome pictures from four years in Japan. She went to Japan in 1948 with her husband a chief analyst in G 2 under General MacArthur and has held roles supporting Japanese social welfare and women’s clubs.
The Walter Burdick Chapter of NSDAR met March 9 at Mrs. Kile MacWherter’s Martinsville home with Lenore Linn assisting. The group sang, read minutes, and approved last meeting notes. Treasurer Dan Gard reported finances and Regent Kile MacWherter shared her Peoria trip as chapter delegate.
