Profit in Dairying: Protein Supplement Impacts Profit
University of Illinois dairy specialist J H Byers explains that profit depends on protein supplement cost and milk price. When protein is cheap and milk fetches high prices, protein feeding is profitable. when protein is costly and milk price is low, large protein use and grain may not pay. Experimental data have not fixed the optimum protein level for maximum milk production.

Dwarf Type Hybrid Corn Yields Surprising Strength
Illinois researchers report new dwarf type hybrids averaging 111 bushels per acre, far below normal U. S. 13 at 136. Dwarfs show little lodging and higher grain per stover, with 110 to 120 pounds grain per 100 pounds stover this year, though seeds remain unavailable for 3 to 5 years.

Frozen semen extends sire's service
A dairy science note discusses storing frozen semen from bulls. The Central Ohio Breeders Association froze 20 000 ampules in six months at about 100 dollars per collection or one dollar per ampule. Dry ice keeps semen at 110 degrees below zero, but Dr. VanDemark expects costs to drop and insemination to become cheap within a few years. Owners of superior bulls are advised to inquire with local breed associations. Milk production research in University Minois uses radioactive carbon 14 to study how cows make milk.
