Sinking of La Provence Eclipses Ocean Disasters
The French Ministry of Marine announced 3130 lives lost when the auxiliary cruiser La Provence sank in the Mediterranean on February 26. About 870 were saved. 296 survivors reached Malta and ~400 Melos. The ship, once a leading liner, had been converted to an auxiliary cruiser and was carrying troops. No submarine signs were noted.
