Desperate pension actions in Washington reveal bizarre evidence like a coffin plate turned in as proof of death. A widow obtained a pension after authorities accepted a buried soldier’s coffin plate, while other cases show fraudulent or odd methods to secure benefits.
Clark county sent three representatives in the 843 graduated class at the State University last Wednesday. Hubert M. English of near Oliver earned a Bachelor of Arts in the pre medical course and plans to study medicine at Harvard next year. Frank Cockrell received a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering and works as a sales agent for Westinghouse Electric in Chicago. Olen Re Clements of West Union earned a BA in the combined law course and will continue law studies next year. The commencement address was given by Count Von Bernsdorff the German ambassador.
Margaret Amacher, 95, of Clark county, was found dead Thursday at her son Chris’s home three miles southwest of the city. Funeral services were held Saturday at the residence, with Rev. L. E. Miller officiating, and interment in Marshall cemetery. Born April 2, 1819 in Berne Switzerland, she married John Amacher in 1841 and came to the United States in 1851. She is survived by one son six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Clarence Davis 21 son of Jeff Davis of Cloane died after being crushed beneath a wagon at a farm near Kansas. A gust blew his hat as mules reared. he fell under the wheels during a sharp turn. Coroner Cook led an inquest finding death by brain hemorrhage.
Marshall faces a push for local factories to employ workers. C r Williams has developed a kitchen cabinet kitchet with experts calling it ahead of similar products. Furniture dealers see strong demand and Williams seeks business partners or a stock company to scale production and build a lasting enterprise.
Sealed bids will be received until July 6 at 12 oclock for supplying the county with coal. Bids must be sealed and delivered to the county clerk. The committee reserves the right to reject any and all bids. Coal to be delivered to the basement of jail and court house.
The assessors report shows horses cattle mules sheep hogs and livestock totals with values. Automobiles and pianos appear among luxuries with Marshall township noting 48 autos and over 70 in the city, many bought after March first.
Martha Gard an 81 year old West Union resident died yesterday morning from carbolic acid poisoning after a period of mental decline and violence. Coroner Haslitt ruled the death a suicide. She leaves three sons Jed Alex and H Z and a daughter Mrs Giles Bartlett all of West Union. Funeral services are set for tomorrow morning with interment in Ohio Cemetery.
The first quarterly meeting of the conference year will be held next Sunday at Zion Big Creek. Rev. J. J. Wise of Indianapolis will preach Saturday at 2 and 8 p m and Sunday at 10 80, with the Lord's Supper. If weather permits, services move to the church lawn. all welcome. Leo J. Ehrhardt, Pastor.
Martinsville Indiana widow reports Sunday night drowning of William Tichenor an eccentric local resident. He reportedly swam poorly and was with two companions who moved to deeper water. An unmarried man, he had worked for neighboring farmers most recently Jesse Blankenbeker. The body was brought to Martinsville for burial Monday.
Mrs. Mary Curran widow of Daniel Curran a pioneer resident of the county died yesterday at her Dolson township home after a long illness aged 84. Survived by her husband and seven sons. Funeral services will be held at St. Mary's church at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
A four room cottage on Thomas Craig's farm in Anderson township near Gideon Mill was destroyed by fire yesterday morning. Sparks from a traction engine along the road set the roof ablaze. The unoccupied house was valued at about 800 dollars with no insurance.
Beginning July 1 rural mail carriers will earn 1200 dollars per year. The pay has risen from 400 dollars annually to the current rate. There are 42 000 rural carriers in the United States.
A. H. Mills of Decatur yesterday was elected president of the Mil nois Sunday School Association. Danville will host the 67th annual State Convention in 1915. Mills urged the convention to ask the legislature to amend the state constitution to grant full and equal suffrage to women and to endorse the Hobson national prohibition bill. both recommendations were adopted without debate.
A group described as Good Roads boosters toured through town on Wednesday. J. H. Minor and C. P. Minor and their wives, traveling by automobile from Los Angeles, were en route to New York, lecturing and distributing good roads literature.
A group of 18 Martinsville high school students fell ill Friday after a school picnic. Eleven suffered ptomaine poisoning from something in their lunch, with several being very sick briefly, but all recovered.
James McCullough, former Illinois state auditor, died Monday at his Urbana home. A soldier who lost an arm at Fort Blakely, Alabama, he served sixteen years as auditor, an unprecedented record. He had been defeated for re election by Brady.
The Board of Review organized Monday with Wm. J. Forbeck as chairman and Burns D. Smith as clerk. Members include WW. J. Sharkey and C. C. Hodges. Sessions run weekly from September through August with hearings set on the 3rd, Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Mr. A. B. Jordan of St. Francis ville is described as one of the fortunate possessors of oil land in the territory. He reportedly earns about 1200 dollars per day from wells flowing on his farm, and appears secure from starvation for now.
A party of Chicago tourists in a red car were stopped Monday afternoon by Martinsville authorities for speeding. They claimed they were not speeding but opted to pay a $3 fine and costs to avoid returning for trial.

Arrangements set for a full day of events in Marshall with Sunday schools and Boy Scouts co managing. The program begins at 10 30 with a parade followed by band music speaking and athletic events including potato sacks races and a 4 mile motorcycle race. Evening features a band concert and torch light parade by the Scouts.
A Wednesday night race riot in Harrisburg pelted Greek laborers with stones and shots after they were brought in by the Big Four Railway to replace discharged Black workers. The Greeks fled to safety as the mob attacked, later leaving town via Marshall and Danville with no injuries reported.
Senator Lawrence Y. Sherman announces his bid to succeed himself as United States Senator from Illinois. He invites Republicans to unite against the Democratic party, pledges to carry former Republican counties, and says he will aid the campaign and return to Illinois when Congress adjourns if needed.

Talbot of Lincoln Neb re-elected head consul over F A Smith by 292% to 18414, James McNamara of Rock Island Ill beat Harry F Hooker of Tecumseh Okla for head clerk. Rates debate continues with Indianapolis rates adopted.
