New Illinois Wheat Grading Rules Lower Farmers Returns
University expert L. F. Suce notes three grade changes will alter Illinois wheat marketing this year. No 2 wheat may contain more than 5 percent other classes, possibly pushing more wheat to No 3 and lowering prices. Hard red winter must have 40 percent dark, hard, vitreous kernels, up from 25 percent, shifting much wheat into yellow hard, which fetches less due to lower protein. Foreign buyers dislike yellow hard, preharvest discounts total 1-3 cents a bushel, with government loans offering a cent discount. Top four grades now restrict foreign material to .5 to 3 percent, reducing typical harvest contamination. Net effect: lower returns for farmers, especially on yellow hard wheat, and tougher grading for grain trade and inspectors.
