Reported in Clark County, 1912, crowds gather as Rev McIntyre and bricklayers work on a new Methodist church. A subscription paper forms, and by night the foundation begins with stoppered wind-blown paper inviting more signers. County graduates and scholars noted with lists and scholarships announced for Clark County schools.
A major blaze destroyed five two story buildings and a three story structure on Martinsville's main street, starting in the Howell building. Losses, estimated near 100000 dollars, wiped out shops including Sitromieys jewelry, Millis restaurant, Logue and Tarman, and others. Fire crews from nearby towns aided but delayed, with many insured firms expecting quick rebuilds.
A national push urges towns to pass and enforce ordinances banning firearms and explosives in Fourth of July celebrations. 1911 statistics show 57 deaths and 1546 serious injuries, with giant firecrackers, firearms, toy cannons, and blank cartridges as major causes. appeal stresses parental help to curb a barbarous practice.
A large crowd at the Pythian Theatre heard exponent King advocate a drag based system for better country roads. In Paris a rabies scare grips the city as a mad dog spreads panic among crowds of people and cattle. Authorities report numerous bites from a doe said to carry the disease and many animals are killed to prevent further risk.
The board of supervisors met on Monday and Tuesday. A key item was a resolution to authorize building a jailer's residence adjacent to the county jail at a cost not to exceed 5000 dollars. Debate over contracting for county office stationery and blanks ended with the measure left to the printing committee. Election judges were appointed with a long list of names from various towns and precincts.
Last week the Marshall Township High School held a graduation in the Pythian Theatre before a full house. Prof. H W Shryock of Carbon dale Normal gave an Education for Efficiency address as diplomas were presented to 21 graduates including Mary Blank Lyman Booth Winona Clatfelter Mary Cole and others. Misses Plank Keifer Ralston Miller Randall and Tau béneck performed roles in the program.
In Washington and Gettysburg the account recalls Jena J. Roosevelt touring the battlefield with a Gettysburg Grand Post guide. He walks Cemetery Ridge Bloody Angle Little Round Top and Big Round Top, noting Union lines and Pickett’s Charge and lamenting the Confederate assault versus impregnable fortifications.
