Last Wednesday Russell Poorman drove seven car loads of hogs and cattle to stock pens at West Union to ship to Indianapolis. The stock was fed on his father's farm near West Union and may be the county's largest single shipment by one man.
Shorthorn and Duroc breeders formed county associations at a Saturday meeting to advance their stock classes. Shorthorn officers include President C. A. Pence, Vice President Martin Dehl, Secretary Treasurer B H Emrich. Duroc officers elected President Ben Emrich, Vice President George Burkholder, Secretary Treasurer G C Cunningham.
Three divorce actions are before the circuit court this week. John C. Kelly of Casey seeks release from Emma L. Kelly alleging desertion. the couple married March 22, 1915 at Fremont, Nebraska and separated May 30, 1915. Harlin A. Steinbaugh accuses Georgia M. Steinbaugh of desertion. they wed in 1899 and have three grown daughters, with Georgia now in Indianapolis. Katie Easterday sues William Easterday for desertion. Easterday resides in Indianapolis.
Mrs Zellie Gardner Buchanan died Wednesday morning at her east town home after a long illness. Funeral services were held Saturday at her residence led by Rev. D. T. Black. She was 74 last April 14 and had eight children five survive Ella Shirler Viola Gaddis Ruth B. Anderson Myrtle Triplett and Charles Lawson. Her first husband William Law died in 1908 and her second husband Nathaniel S Buchanan died in 1917. She had been in poor health for two years and bedridden for several weeks.
Annual baccalaureate for graduating seniors held in Methodist church. Rev. Powers delivered a sermon titled The Triumph of Truth. Graduates listed include Mary Alford, Frank Curran, Eugene Chenoweth, and others. Junior class hosted a four course banquet. toastmasters and performances featured. Commencement set for Friday at Pythian Theater with reserved seats sold at Keifer's drug store. class play The New Co ed sold out tonight.
An automobile tour for Clark County farmers to visit Iowa State University projects on fertilizing crop rotation feeding and breeding is set for Thursday June 12. Guides will explain experiments and a stop at W E Riegel’s 80 acre farm south of Urbana is planned. The trip aims to be profitable and interesting for all, with autos loading to capacity.
Fewer people attended Friday’s Decoration Day events as farmers rushed corn planting due to fine weather. The program largely succeeded except for the absence of the planned participation by young soldiers. Father Wilson delivered a fitting Catholic cemetery address, Olen R. Clements spoke at the Pythian Theater, and 170 graves in two cemeteries were decorated. Only fifteen Civil War veterans joined the parade.

Mrs Harriet Hollenbeck widow died Friday at her Darwin home after a long stomach cancer illness at age 59. Survived by two daughters and three sisters. Funeral services conducted by Rev W H Stephens were held in Darwin Saturday.
The Kansas & Sidell Railroad Co filed with the state public utilities commission on Friday for permission to issue 25000 dollars of capital stock and 125000 dollars in gold bonds to facilitate the purchase of the Sidell and Olney road. The Westfield Railroad Co also petitioned for authority to issue 85000 dollars of capital stock to aid the same purchase.
William Craig of Terre Haute visited Sol Craig in West Union. While crossing the Narrows the car rolled off the ferry into ten foot water. Craig escaped waist deep, while his wife and children left the vehicle. Chains secured the car and a gasoline launch hauled it out. The incident prompts calls for better ferry safeguards and urges families to exit before loading onto ferries.
County school commencement will be held Saturday June 28 with announcements to follow. Miss Ruth Nicol’s name was unintentionally omitted in the promotions list and corrections are issued. Robert Francis, among Crawford county's oldest citizens living near Nellaire, ended his life Wednesday by self-inflicted means. He was a nonagenarian.
Pliny Draper a longtime Melrose township resident died suddenly of epilepsy last Wednesday at age 79 years and two months. He worked as a carpenter and was highly regarded. He leaves a wife and one son. Funeral services were held at Bailiff church by Rev. Herman Bennett of Martinsville and he was buried in Lindley cemetery.
First Congregational Church plans a 7 30 pm mid week service and reports on a convention. A social last Wednesday featured games and the mortgage burning marking full debt payment. Mrs Schwanecke recounts Marshall 1850 church history. Morning worship at 11 includes a sermon by the pastor. Boy Scouts and children’s day events noted.
The State Highway Commission opened bids in Springfield for the National Highway improvements in Clark and Cumberland counties. Bids exceeded engineer estimates with Etchison of Casey winning 9.05 miles from Marshall to near Martinsville for 370 063.30 and Heyworth of Chicago securing the east Marshall segment at the estimate, with Cumberland County contracts totaling over 600 000 for Etchison as the top bidder.
