Old Time Cannon Found in Wabash River Bed Near Huntington
Fishermen in six feet of water four miles west of Huntington discover a corroded cannon likely from the War of 1812 or earlier. The 20 inch long piece with a 1.5 inch bore and four to six inch diameters on the muzzle and breech was hard to extract. Nearby Indian camps and historic battles along the Wabash and Mississinewa rivers suggest it may be a relic of planter warfare and early campaigns with Col John Campbell and Capt LaBlanc’s forces referenced in local history.
