Margaret Hogue recently marked her 98th birthday with an open house hosted by her granddaughters for a small circle of friends. The accompanying photo features Mrs. Hogue.
The 1969 Heart Fund Drive climaxes this weekend with Lions Club volunteers canvassing the business area on Saturday February 22 and Triple-T 4-H Club members seeking residents on Sunday February 23. Led by John Douglas and Woodford Williams, the effort includes city co chairman Mrs Joe Kemp and other leaders. Returns from the campaign totaled $1968.84, showing Clark county residents’ awareness of heart issues.
A meeting to institute the new auxiliary to Don Stepp Memorial Post 5975 is set for Sunday afternoon February 23 at 2 30 p m in the American Legion auditorium Marshall. The public is invited. The regular meeting nights were changed to the first and third Monday each month with the next regular meeting on Monday March 3 at 7 30 p m in city hall.
Mr and Mrs Clarence Lederman announce the approaching marriage of their daughter Donna to James G Ingle. The wedding is set for 7:00 p m on March 15 at the West Union Christian Church with friends invited.
The Womans Civic Club plans a house to house canvass to raise funds for birth defect research. They apologize for confusion over a date shared with Heart Sunday and say the mothers march will now be March 2 at 1 30. Mrs Lena Rittenhaus of Paris is a patient in Burnside Home.
A large family skating party was held at the Paris skating rink on Thursday February 13. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Charles Wright Pam and Tresa of Danville Illinois and many relatives from West Terre Haute Paris Decatur and New Holland among others. The gathering celebrated February birthdays with a long list of Siverly Wallace Hibschman and fellow families attending.
The February meeting of the Catholic Youth Organization met in the Rectory basement on February 12 at 7:00 p m. President Don Ferris led the session with minutes and a treasurer report. Members discussed fundraising ideas and upcoming inter-parish meetings. A money making project was slated for final decision at the March gathering. Father Murray outlined Lenton services. Bingo and refreshments followed for thirty two members.
The Clark County Republican Woman's Club will meet in the Scout Building on February 24 at 7 00 p m. An interesting program has been planned and all members are urged to attend Bring dessert or sandwiches All interested persons are invited to attend.
Mr and Mrs Floyd Dean Sweltzer announce the birth of a girl named Margaret Ann born February 4 at Union Hospital weighing nine pounds one ounce. The mother is the former Maxine Beltz. Margaret Ann is welcomed home by three brothers. Mr and Mrs Dale Crumrine announce a boy named Robert Wayne born February 16 weighing eight pounds six ounces and welcomed home by a sister Leeann.
The Marshall Fire Department extinguished a car fire on Locust Street near the water tower Saturday afternoon. It involved a vehicle owned by Doug Barrett. the cause was not determined.
Judge Connelly backs Congressman Cannon in introducing a House resolution authorizing the Secretary of War to donate to Marshall one German cannon captured by American forces in the present war. Also notes temporary rural carrier appointment for Harry A. Johnson and the upcoming Victory Loan bond issue to April 1. Marriage licenses issued to Nettie Fitzgarrald and Grace Barbee.
Forty years ago in 1929 Marshall area notes report Frank Jeffers renting Plymout h Rock Inn near Marshall from Miss Bertha Newby of Charleston. Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No 889 formed with officers Wm Geheb Frank Manley John Merrick Harry Cropp Herman Little Ernest Kile Garner Gauthney Max Zschau Ralph Prevo. Marshall Fire Dept extinguished a noon roof fire at the Davidson home on Main Street causing a large hole in the roof.
Everett Carpenter age 38 and Hume Minois with Anne Evans age 24 of Paris Illinois received marriage licenses. Samuel Finkhiner of Marshall married Miss Alice Stampley in Terre Haute Sunday at 11 30 am. Raymond Zschau of Marshall and Ellen Rowe of Martinsville wed at the bride’s home last Saturday at 10 one. A coal drag heading north from southern Illinois wrecked near West Union depot yesterday morning about 7 30 causing twelve coal cars to derail with no injuries reported from a broken rail.
On Sunday February 20 Mr and Mrs Joe Martin of Fishback vicinity suffered major home damage and loss of furnishings. Marriage licenses issued to Lee Tarble and Josephine Flenner, Charles Allen Stone and Juanita Rose Wilson. Births include Judy Kay Elliott in Terre Haute weighing five pounds ten ounces and a daughter for Harvey Kesler and Louise Haugh of Marshall born at St Anthony Hospital. Frances Curran and Norma Jane Elam’s son Richard Lawrence born February 22 weighing seven pounds one and a half ounces. Wesley Carpenter of Anderson township received a $2 bounty from county clerk H J Kemp on fox 220.
Ten years ago in 1959 marriage licenses were issued to William J Farrell 18 of Casey and Carol F Martin 16 of Casey Kent Hall 19 of Casey and DeAnna McDaniel 16 of Casey Wilson M Camp 49 of Chicago and Irene.
Russell E Laird 68 died Tuesday morning at St Anthony Hospital from an apparent heart attack. He was an LP Gas and Appliance dealer and active in Masonic Lodge 19 Terre Haute Zorah Shrine Scottish Rite Clark County Shrine Club and Marshall Rotary Club past president. Survived by wife Mary Lou two daughters Carolyn Ogle and Marjorie Laird a sister Florence Smith and granddaughter Marsha Ogle. Funeral 2 p.m. Saturday Moore Funeral Home with Rev Burt McIntosh. burial Marshall cemetery calling after 7 p.m. Thursday Masonic services Friday 7 p.m.
Final plans set for the fourth annual sports banquet on March 1 at 6 30 Pm in the Colonial Kitchen. George Blanda of the Oakland Raiders will be the featured speaker with Bert Shaffner as MC. Coaching from nearby colleges and high schools will attend. Twenty Marshall High seniors will be honored. All two hundred tickets sold, with room for about twenty five more diners and extra chairs for the program after dinner.
Darrell and Charles Macke receive junior membership in the American Angus Association at St Joseph Missouri. The secretary Lloyd Miller notes junior members may register pure bred Angus at regular rates and enjoy association privileges until age 21 when they may convert to lifetime memberships. Seventy three junior members were added nationwide last month.
The Women Fellowship of the Congregational Church met Tuesday at the home of Mrs Fimner Renner with co hosts. Mrs Hurley Nicol led the program and attendees included Mrs Fred Ravil, Mrs Fenton Cole, Mrs Doll, Mrs Ravilla Fairgrief, and others plus two guests.
Sgt Ben J Bekler of the State Police will be guest speaker Sunday February 23 at 10 30 am at Trinity Church Michigan and Chestnut Streets. The Alcohol Education Committee invites the public to attend this service.

Mrs Cook is formerly Marilyn Ann Chapman. Mr and Mrs William Dewey announce a seven pound girl Crystal LeAnn at Union Hospital. mother is the former Mahala Wolcott. Mr and Mrs Demas Lindley are parents of a baby boy born at Union Hospital weighing eight pounds five ounces. Terre Haute. Mr and Mrs Dale Norton announce an 11 pound baby boy at Union Hospital. Mr and Mrs Bill Beuhler of Vincennes announce a son Bryan Duane born February 14 in Vincennes Hospital. Beuhlers’ son is from Sumner, Illinois, former Marshall residents.
The Marshall heavyweights finish the season with an 18 1 record after a close win over Paris Mayo. Tom York leads the Cubs with 23 points, Howard Johnson adds 11, and Mayo's Elledge and Blair top scoring with 13 and 10. The Cubs claim the EF TIT Conference Tournament trophy by beating Cumberland Westfield and Newton, led by York with 75 points over three games.
Clark County schools on February 17 authorized Dr Robert Shoff of Eastern Illinois University to lead an educational survey. Citizens aided by consultants will study financing housing and curriculum with a final report due by June 1.
Specialist Fourth Class Larry Schestt son of Mrs Marv Schertt of Marshall received a promotion to Specialist Fourth Class in Kontum Vietnam. A heavy truck driver for Company 299th Medical Battalion at Kontum he arrived overseas September 16 1968 and was promoted January 30.
Residents argue that consolidating Clark County schools shifts school board control away from voters to reduce local taxes. They question whether tax savings justify reduced taxpayer influence.
Boy Scouts and Explorers from the Wabash Valley Council seek 40 participants for a Philmont Scout Ranch trek in New Mexico. Current signups total 22. Depart Terre Haute June 19, travel to Houston then Philmont, returning July 7.
The Casey Parents Group gathered to discuss programs for children with reports from Mrs Golden Greesen and several teachers including Mrs Father Hill and Mra Heeling Cutts. Speakers Archie Burgett from Champaign and a Mattoon area coordinator spoke on community support, while refreshments were provided by Mrs Markwell and Mrs Artlevy and their 4-H girls.
