A Congregational church service Sunday combined a Lincoln memorial with the dedication of a service flag for ten young men in U S service. Judge F W Booth spoke urging sacrifice for democracy as the flag unfurled listing Bartlett Bartlett Booth Cole Harlan Kershaw Lucan Poorman Mitchell Butler. Poorman and Harlan already in France.
Some 75 cars loaded with miscellaneous freight that had stood on Vandalia sidetracks were moved east last Saturday as part of nationwide efforts to clear railway congestion.
Joseph Hotz of Edwardsville and George Bauer of Effingham arrived Friday to instruct taxpayers on the new income tax law. They were joined by Judge A. L. Stephens of Robinson, deputy collector, and will remain in the county through the week at Martinsville and Casey.
The county court term began with Waterbury Co. vs. Directors of School District No. 31 over a canceled heater order. Jury awarded $21 to the plaintiffs. Multiple defendants faced fines and dismissals for offenses including selling intoxicants and neglecting child support. Pearl Smith and others were acquitted of selling diseased meat.
The county exemption board reports 47 men to be sent to Camp Taylor next week, from the first 50 listed. The group includes Harry H. Kuhn, Frank Lewis, Mayor Harrison Waltrip, John Geheb, Alvin Thomas Miller, James H. Johnson, Albert N. Cline, and many others. The selectees will depart within five days of Feb 23 after classification into Class 1.

Thieves blew open the safe in George Ragan & Son’s Auburn general store shortly after 5 PM on Monday. The blast shattered the safe and front windows but left only a collection of old coins and a word for 100 missing. Neighbors woke to the noise and saw two men drive east in a buggy.
The Herald planned to start Sergeant Empey’s great war story this week but did not finish arrangements. It will certainly begin in next week’s issue.
A large turnout at the Clark County court house organized the Clark County Farm Bureau. Dr Coffee of the University of Illinois spoke on bureau goals as officers were elected including President John Kettling and Vice President B H Emrick. The group plans 200 initial members and a farm advisor will be appointed with the State University.
Marcus F Thompson died suddenly at his home in Marshall last Thursday morning. Funeral services were held at the ME church Friday. Born July 27 1867 in Casey he grew up there and in Martinsville before moving to Marshall. He married Elizabeth German May 13 1885 and had two sons Lavern and Russell. five grandchildren. Survived by wife two sons two brothers and two sisters. A farmer in youth he later worked as a city employee and was active in the community though not a church member.
Lincoln exercises at the North Side school featured a D AR program with prize essays on Illinois in the Centennial. Mildred Washburn and Ora Weir received $1 prizes for their essays and performances by violin and cornet, school orchestra, and selections led by Prof Fenton Mathews and Supt. Harold Bright.
Grover Rademaker, once in business with brother John in Marshall, was in the forestry division on the Tuscania. The ship was torpedoed last week by Germans and he was reported missing. He had joined the forestry force in Montana last fall. a telegram to John Rademaker said his brother was among the rescued.
John Forbeck was arrested in Terre Haute and brought here Thursday charged with failing to support his children. He went to jail. Clifford Fields of Casey was jailed Wednesday on a charge of assault and battery brought by his wife. Joe was released from jail on bond Thursday afternoon.

Roy Kenneth Richey aged one son of Mr and Mrs J W Richey died at his home near Livingston last Wednesday Funeral services were held at the home Friday and burial was to take place in Kansas
Reverend Samuel George Lamb born August 7 1847 in Mount Vernon Ohio served as pastor for Congregational churches from Milford Nebraska to Highland California died January 31 in Highland California Survived by wife and daughter Ruth The San Bernardino Daily Sun noted his life with high regard and described his gentle personality and lifelong service

John Smith aged about 50 died suddenly Monday evening after returning from Marshall where he attended court. He sat by the fire at home and was found dead in his chair when his wife called. In related notes, Clark county citizens were listed as enemy aliens by the Marshall postmaster lacking final naturalization papers and now must file records with photos and fingerprints.

In Coles county a bill filed by Joseph Foreman’s brother Edward asks the circuit court to set aside deeds given to his wife Pansy Brown amid claims Foreman, nearly 70 and mentally incapacitated, was coerced in a Terre Haute marriage. Foreman’s assets include 160 acres in Hutton township and up to ten thousand dollars in personal property. the suit alleges the union was to defraud him and seeks restoration of control over his estate.
A soldier named Percy Cox writes from somewhere in France to his parents. He reports good health aside from a slight cold and describes living in squad tents with furniture and stoves, receiving a Red Cross sweater, socks, and nut cookies. He notes cigarette shortages, limited letter writing, and his wish to speak French while warning his family about overcharging locals.
John B. Kellogg son of Mr and Mrs F W Kellogg and Miss Lorena V English daughter of Mrs Charles Flowers were married Monday evening in the study of Centenary M E church Terre Haute Rev Mr Morris officiating. The groom works as a clerk at the Dunois Pipstine Company office and the bride has attended a Terre Haute commercial school.
Veteran Hiram Wilson of Marshall dies at home on North Michigan Avenue at age 73. He served in the Confederate Army and is survived by his wife four sons and three daughters. Born in Tennessee he lived many years in the community.
