American naval railway batteries with 14 inch guns arrived in France and blasted Laon with five guns believed by Germans to be thirty. Mangin credits Rear Admiral Plunkett and crews for Laon’s fall as shells pounded fortifications and lines behind them. A French soldier near the blasts survived as the trio fired in rapid succession. The last shell timed to explode exactly at 11:00 a.m. November 11, signaling armistice.
