One hundred four delegates from twenty one American nations gather in Havana to discuss a proposed twenty year naval program costing about two and a half billion dollars. The plan envisions multiple ships including fast cruisers and aims to influence global peace and power dynamics amid criticisms and geopolitical tensions.
The Fort Wayne district reports on honor roll lists for North Side and South Side Grade Schools. Seniors lead with 627 names, sophomores 20, freshmen 13, while juniors show ten names. The compiled roster names students across grades 2 to 8, including pupils like Virginia Guinnip George Mitchell Mary Garwood and Josephine Eitel, with detailed lists for each grade and gender.
An audit by the County Auditing Company of Springfield led by A Ray Drennan found no evidence of intentional irregularities or fraud among Clark county officials. It commends the officials as a capable, conscientious team and notes salaries were within allowances. It highlights increased court receipts from the clerk Leroy McNary’s office and suggests Sheriff Harry Coldren’s fees could rise if collected in advance.
Mrs. Harry L. Deming died at her Robinson home early Wednesday morning after a night when she felt slightly ill. The couple had discussed her nausea but did not see it as serious before her death. She leaves her husband and three children and had many friends in Marshall where Mr. Deming had spoken at Rotary Club and the Methodist church.
Hash Huff age 23 was arrested Tuesday by Night Policeman Charles Short at his parents home in Lower Wabash. Day Policeman J W Wallace received a message from Washington that Huff deserted from the United States Army, having left Oklahoma on December 9 1927. Huff enlisted August 13 1925. he was taken to Fort Benjamin Harrison Indianapolis Wednesday and turned over to army officials.
Sparks from a chimney set fire to the roof of Representative Walter E. Cork's house on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Cork extinguished the blaze before officers arrived, a small hole in the roof noted as the source. No injuries reported and the marshal was alerted.
Dispatches from Springfield report Cook County paid nearly 40 percent of all automobile license fees in 1927. Hardin County paid the least, with $7,782, up $138 from 1926. The accompanying table compares license fees by surrounding counties for 1926 and 1927.
The Eastern Illinois High School League basketball event comes to Casey February 9 10 and 11 with teams Marshall Martinsville Westfield Robinson Paris Kansas Charleston Charleston T C Toledo Effingham Oblong Hutsonville Greenup Newton Palestine Casey. Marshall meets Paris Friday at 9 00 am in the Casey high school gymnasium.
The Marshall Township High School dairy short course will hold two more meetings. On February 7 a state veterinarian from the Springfield Department of Agriculture will discuss Symptoms Prevention and Treatment of Common Diseases of Dairy Cattle. The final session on February 14 features J He Brock of the University of Illinois Dairy Extension Department on Dairy Herd Improvement Associations.
A farm wagon ran over Herman Pawley’s left foot causing severe bruising and tearing garments. The accident occurred Saturday on Mr Paintes’s Mareball area when he was working with a team and wagon on the farm north of Mareball.
State officials confirm Route 49 south of Casey is surveyed through to the Clark Jasper county line for build. The AC Trail south from Charleston on Route 130 was set to begin near Springfield with Folks Construction Company of Terre Haute as apparent low bidder at 217518.34 dollars for 9 miles of road.
Girls' class basketball games begin February first with Miss Kermit Cochran coaching. Senior captain Frances Ferris leads the seniors, while junior leader Mildred Spittler heads the juniors. The curtain raiser on February 14 features the seniors versus juniors, followed by a Sophomores versus freshmen game on February 28. The two winners meet in the finals.
Rev. Clark S. Thomas reported his car parked on the Circle in Indianapolis had its rear window glass knocked out Saturday. The back door door was unlocked and opened. a suit hanging in the back and his traveling bag plus other belongings were stolen.

Walter Welsh of Wabash township has earned over $200 monthly from eggs from his flock of 500 White Leghorn pullets, according to Clark County Farm Advisor R. B. Apple.
Springfield officials report Honorable L I Emmerson secretary of state presented the first copies of the 927 Blue Book last week. The volume is described as the largest and most complete Blue Book produced in Illinois.
John Mullen, long employed at a Lawrenceville restaurant, bought out the owner and now runs the place. The Mullens moved their home to Lawrenceville on Tuesday.
