Reverend G G Ross, pastor of the Congregational churches of Marshall and Allright, resigns and will conclude his duties January 1. After nearly four years in Marshall he says the time has come to place church responsibility on others and plans a Florida stay to assess his frost-damaged fruit grove. He also intends brief visits to McPherson and Hutchinson, Kansas, to advocate Congregational work. The local church has not decided on future plans.
Clark County Post No. 90 of the American Legion will again distribute Christmas baskets to needy families in Marshall and vicinity. The plan, adopted three years ago, asks for cooperation and will supply baskets and identification tags. Leroy McNary is basket committee chairman and will provide family and child details. Baskets must be prepared and delivered to Marshall Auto Sales by 8 30 am Saturday December 24 1927.
Four cases set before Judge George W. Bristow as the November term of circuit court reconvenes. The People vs Fred Nees and Jessie Hires involve rape charges. Melvin Greasham faces forging a check, while Harry Robison is charged with larceny.
Phillip Millis, 35, a farmer in Hennessey, Oklahoma, killed his wife and four children with an ax while they slept before hanging himself. The victims include Minnie Millis, 35. twins Tina and Burrell, 13. Marie, 9. Wayne, 5. and Dale, 5 months old. Schoolteacher Mrs. Brumley fled the home during the attack. Authorities note Millis was a longtime local farmer.
Charles Weaver and Ebbie Phillips, Casey, aged 54 and 60, apply for marriage license. Harley Dean of Spelterville Indiana, 25, to Lamberium Thess, 16, also listed in Spelterville.

Miss Kratzer won first place at the Clark county spelling contest held at the courthouse with Miss Mildred Carroll of Marshall taking second. The top five were Kratzer, Carroll, Opal Claypool, Maxine Polk, and Paul Walter. Kratzer advances to the state competition in Springfield on December 27.
The county board debated paying Judge Jed Gard the new state mandated salary of 2500 dollars, with amusement over his wife crying for bread. They authorized future levy to cover back pay and approved related measures including gas tax distributions and bond costs for treasurer Norman Forsythe.
Dave Tingley sent a telegram to Berkeley seeking help to find his brother Frank Tingley who left Marshall November 15 for his daughter’s home in Inglewood California and has not been heard from since. Items believed to belong to him were found at a Victorville California bank steps, prompting fears of foul play.
J R McGrath of the Sugar Creek Creamery Company Danville will discuss Feeding the Dairy Cow for Economical Production at the dairy short course. The talk is set for Tuesday evening December 21 at 7:00 after program changes moving sessions to Tuesday evenings.
Walter Brewer, former circuit court judge, joins Walter J. Grant of Danville to open Brewer Grant for general law practice. Offices will be in Danville hill. Brewer is well known in Clark County.

Mrs Elizabeth Hedden, 76, died in Wabash township. services at residence Sunday 10 AM, Rev. Bert Eckle. burial Taylor cemetery.
Eugene Elmore and Elmore infant died Friday and were buried in the Marshall Cemetery. parents are Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Elmore.
At Marshall Chamber of Commerce, President Lloyd Pulver named John McCauley Rev Howard Leach and James Colgrove to organize a community Christmas tree. A Route 49 pavement through Westfield was supported. The Tourist Park report called 1927 weaker than 1926. Madonna of the Trail sculpture was discussed. D A R chose markers for the National Old Trail in 12 states. The matter was referred to the D A R and Woman's Club. Monthly meetings set for the second Monday noon.
Officers for the coming year were elected at a Masonic Lodge meeting Wednesday evening. Chosen were Vern Spotts as Worshipful Master Max Foreman as Senior Warden Harry Findley as Junior Warden R L Hunt as treasurer and W F Hutchinson as secretary.
In Friday’s high school game Marshall edged Toledo 16 15. McGee shone at guard and Buckner scored 14 as Marshall shows early cohesion. Earlier Marshall beat Palestine 30 12 Tuesday, with notable defensive effort and lineup includes Bradbury Fawley and Combs.
Announcement of Miss Aleda Davis marrying Kenneth Rench on November 22 in Indianapolis. Mrs. Rench, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Davis of Marshall, will stay in Indianapolis until year’s start, then move to Troy Ohio. Rench works in the family lumber business and will head a Troy branch.
W. H. Smith, state leader, will lecture on Efficiency in Farm Bureau Work during the Clark County Farm Bureau annual gathering. The event runs December 21 from 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM at the courthouse with reports from T. N. Wright and others, a limestone registration cutoff at 11:00, and officer elections at 1:00 PM. Earl C. Smith and W. H. Smith will address the afternoon session.
Charles Short, night policeman, arrests Clarence Steurwald alias Robert James Emerson, 20, of Strassburg IL, after car theft from Terre Haute owners William Root and Margaret Shaw. Steurwald, who fled after crashing near Marshall, confesses to theft and Army desertion. car traced by Terre Haute police.
Representative Wm P Holaday of Illinois introduced in the house a bill creating a nationwide highway system funded by government borrowing up to 5 billion dollars. Bond issues would be authorized to finance the project.
Former Marshall resident Miss Dorothy Hoey married Howell E. Hays in Tulsa Oklahoma on Saturday December 3. Mrs. Hays is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank Hoey and the family are longtime Marshall exresidents.
