City council meeting in Marshall adjourned without formal adjournment after brief discussion. Aldermen Howell Machlan Dunn were absent or left early amid discussion of traffic orders and a fire prevention appeal by Fenton Cole, who cited three open fires in local businesses.
At a banquet at the American Cafe Tuesday evening the Tri County Undertakers Association was organized by 19 members from Crawford Clark and Edgar counties. Bruno Ruedy Casey was elected president, BE Pearce Hutsonville vice president and C W Wright Paris secretary treasurer. Edgar county attended fully, Clark had one absence and Crawford one present. A second meeting will set by laws and a constitution with future quarterly gatherings.
Samuel C. Prevo 78 died at St Anthony s Hospital in Terre Haute at 3 10 yesterday morning. He is survived by wife Emily three sons Henry Edgar Gordon of Greencastle one daughter Mrs Harry D Irwin of Chicago a sister Mrs A C Brice of Columbus Ohio a brother Charles Prevo of West Union Illinois four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral at 441 North Eighth Street at 2 p m tomorrow. Burial in Highland Lawn cemetery.
The Business Men's Club of Casey is actively campaigning to establish a shoe factory in the city and reports indicate growing success from meetings and outreach.
Mrs. Irene Cline was elected president for the coming year of the Auxiliary of the American Legion at the meeting held Monday evening.
On February 9 10 and 11 a state school will be held for the Masons at Paris. Several members of the Masonic Lodge here will attend.
Malinda Katherine Crawford wife of Alanson Crawford died Tuesday morning at her home in Wabash township aged 76. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 at Dennison church with Rev. R. F. Purdue officiating. Interment followed in Dunlap cemetery.
The Redmen Lodge will hold its annual rabbit and chicken supper on Monday night at the I O O R M hall. Members are urged to attend and bring their rabbits or chicken by noon. A program will precede supper at 9 39.
Terre Haute based clerk John Brandenstein reports record non-resident hunting license sales totaling 108 issued mostly to Terre Haute residents or visitors. Revenue to the state treasury exceeds 1 024 65 with licenses priced at 10 50 each. Brandenstein notes two licenses issued to women and hints at strong late season demand as wardens confirm the trend.
The Clark County Farm Bureau schedules its eighth annual meeting at the courthouse next Wednesday. Program includes calls to order, secretary and treasurer reports, nominating committee appointment, director elections, farmer talks, and an address by Senator Andrew S. Cuthbertson of Bunker Hill from the 38th Illinois district.
The Clark County spelling contest will be held in the courthouse this afternoon and tonight with afternoon elimination and evening oral rounds. Mrs Flora Witt Wolcott daughter of Mr and Mrs John Witt East Crawford street and George F Purdum of Casper Wyoming wed in Billings Montana on December 2 They will reside in Casper after February 1 Purdum a general superintendent of a four state gas line company is son of Mr and Mrs Gus Purdum of Marshall Flora Wolcott has been county auditor at Billings for six years They begin a wedding trip to Seattle Los Angeles Paris and Marshall before arriving home December 20
Lawrence Newlin of West York, longtime champion cattle feeder from Eastern Illinois, earned new honors at the International Live-Stock Show in Chicago. He shipped three carloads, two qualifying as entries. Angus steers averaged 1425 pounds and sold for 16.25 per hundred, groomed by Joe Signs, while Herefords averaged 1150 pounds and sold for 14.50. Newlin had fed these cattle for one year.
Edwin Clapper has been elected Supreme Shepherd of the Flock of the White Shrine. This state office is a high honor and confirms his leadership role within the organization.
A list of marriages shows Herbert Remler and Mary C Henning of Mt Carmel, Charles Harkness and Maude Harkness of Terre Haute, Geo W Eads of New York and Viola M Bloss of Chicago, Earl Sweitzer and Marie Baggs of Wabash Township, John A Swan of Hayes South Dakota and Tempia M Craig of Martinsville, Emmet E Smith and Sadie Harris of Advance. The licenses cover ages from 18 to 45 and span multiple cities.
T. B. Griffin bought the barbecue stand near the Keystone filling station at the highway crossing. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Medley and son Eugene visited Wm. Mathew and family over the weekend. Mrs. Will McDaniel spent last week with relatives near Indianapolis.
About 175 members of the Marshall Cooperative Shipping Association met at the high school for an oyster supper and meeting. Manager T R Lovett reported a 20 percent rise in business, handling 86 carloads worth about 30 percent more per car and total business of 121,682 this year. New directors were elected: Chris Imle and J Snedeker. H Kelley of the Indianapolis Producers Association praised market improvements and noted farmers’ gains from higher sheep prices. Delegates Chris Imle and Roy Baird were chosen for the Producers’ annual meeting in Indianapolis on December 29. The oyster supper preceded by the domestic science class was well received.
R S Marsh of the Horticultural Extension Dept University of Illinois will hold two meetings in Clark county for commercial orchardists. The first at Walter Cline's farm east of Martinsville at 10 o'clock, the second at G C Cunningham's peach orchard south of Martinsville at 1 30, and a Farm Bureau office session in Martinsville from 2 30 to 4 00 for orchardists to discuss local problems.
George W Eads of New York and Viola M Bloss of Chicago were married by Squire Jay Swern here Saturday in a simple local ceremony.
Miss Margaret Cork, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Cork, received a $1.00 check from the Chicago Tribune on Monday for a contribution printed in the Embarassing Moments column. New cases in circuit court include J. A. Mundy versus Pearl Hall on appeal.
Orin Greenwell living south of Martinsville was fined 75 dollars in Squire Jay Swern's court for dealing in furs without a license charged by Game Warden E P Waters. Herschel Lowery of Wabash township was fined 25 dollars for hunting without a license brought before Swern by Game Warden Waters.
The Game and Fish division brought about 15 000 fish to Big Creek from the Mississippi rescue effort. The article notes changes in the central zone game and fish code including licensing for fur dealers and trapping, age requirements for hunting licenses, and protected song birds. Clark County Post No. 90 of the American Legion held its annual election and banquet with about 80 members present. Perce Cox was re elected commander and the post outlined a 1926 program including public entertainments and community welfare plans. A committee was formed to organize Christmas baskets and collect gifts for needy ex service families. The post aims to renew all 176 members by December 31 to achieve a 100 percent national citation.
Committees for the Near East relief movement raised 181.27 dollars with 125 contributors. The project finished Monday and organizers thanked donors and volunteers, noting a minor initial organizational mix up but praising the overall response.
