Zachary Taylor Cantonment near Louisville Kentucky will host a citizen training camp from January 6 for two weeks. The program offers infantry field artillery cavalry motor transport and a development battalion for men over 18. The cost for the two week course is thirty dollars and it may shape future cantonment use.
Mayor Lewis appoints Howard Handley as night officer granting full police powers. His prior successful record in the role raises expectations for the new arrangement.
The local draft board received orders Monday to seal all papers and close up their work. The tedious task included unpleasant features, but the board members faced the situation unflinchingly and produced a splendid record.
Relatives of Edward Redman of Douglas township learned last Friday he was killed in action in France on November 11 at age 22 after three months in Europe. The Sunday casualty list also lists Jesse O Burns of Oliver as killed in action. In county news, court notes include conservator appointment for Mrs Sarah L Patton and charges of carrying concealed weapons against William Lowry and Arthur Stagg. John Johnson of Westfield pleaded guilty to petit larceny and was sentenced to Pontiac State Reformatory for one year.
William Riley born November 17 1889 in Terre Haute died November 26 1918. He is survived by his parents three sisters and one brother Mrs C E Fox of Indianapolis Mrs F A Stahlacker of Terre Haute Mrs H A Orcutt of West Union and Forrest Riley of Terre Haute. Funeral services were held at the home of Mrs Orcutt conducted by Rev Chalk Bailey and burial in York cemetery. The Marshall Club held a dance with an Terre Haute orchestra providing music.

Charles E. Mcllrath born February 4 1889 in Clark County died December 2 1918 in Gary Indiana after influenza. He married Jennie Reed in 1909 and left five children, a wife, father and three sisters. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery Gary Indiana.
Death of a Pioneer reports the passing of Mrs. Mary Flueckiger at 95 in Anderson township with services at her home and burial in the family cemetery. It also notes Elisha J. Shirely of Wabash township died at 66 near Dennison with funeral at Livingston and burial in Livingston cemetery. Shirely was a lifelong Methodist and left a wife three sons and a daughter.
Russell Smittkamp aged 1 years died November 12 after pneumonia following influenza. Born February 1 1898 near Paris he was the oldest child of Henry and Maggie Smittkamp and is survived by four brothers and two sisters. Funeral services were at Grandview cemetery Edgar County with Rev. Arvon officiating.
Lafayette Walker born January 8 1847 died December 6 1918 at his niece Flora Vargas home in West Union where he had lived since August returning from Summertown Tennessee. He married Flora Pease in 1874, then Emma Knipe in 1883 and Mary Thompson in 1890. He leaves children Si las, Vera, two grandchildren and siblings. funeral at Friends Church led by Rev Chalky Bailiff with burial at Shawler cemetery beside his wife.
A meeting will be held in Martinsville this evening to form a federation of county banks. The organizers say the alliance would benefit both banks and the public through coordinated services and improved interbank cooperation.
Homer H. Herring of Wabash township died of influenza at Effingham where he worked as Vandalia section foreman. He was 38 and is survived by four children. funeral at Dennison.
