The Illinois Department of Health issued a statement calling Spanish influenza the greatest scourge in state history with about 1,340,000 cases and over 22,500 deaths. It urges local public health organization, case reporting, quarantine, crowd control, ventilation, and personal precautions to prevent spread and pneumonia.
Lieut. Jon Mitchell in France describes volunteering for aero plane observers, undergoing a physical, and being stationed near Bordeaux. He details monastery life with monks, cathedral architecture from the 9th to 15th centuries, and Napoleon’s troops, noting encounters with Chicago pals and a former D battery captain in Bordeaux. Mrs. Robert Jacobs died yesterday at her home on South Second Street from influenza and complications. She was 40 and survived by her husband. Funeral services will be held at 1 30 today from her late home conducted by Rev. J I O Neal.

Olen R. Clements returns from Camp Gordon Ga with a commission as second lieutenant of infantry and will resume duties as state's attorney at once. Fred Fawley also arrived from the same camp bearing a gold shoulder bar.

Announcement from Sidell & Olney offices in Hume Illinois states that McAdoo has authorized suspension of the road from Kansas west to Olney. The eastern segment from Kansas through Edgar Vermilion counties to Sidell remains in operation for now. J B Moreland of Hume is general manager and East St. Louis Trust Co. represents bondholders as receiver. The pause cuts rail service for Westfield.
Mrs Lillian Slusser widow of Professor H E Slusser principal of Marshall city schools died last Wednesday from pneumonia after an attack of grip. She was 22 years old and the daughter of Henry and Anna Green of Johnson township. A Casey high school graduate she attended Charleston Normal and taught four years. Survived by husband son four brothers and four sisters. Funeral at her late home conducted by Rev P R Powers. Burial at Wesley Chapel cemetery Orange township.

Mrs. Mary Dickerson aged 42 died Saturday evening at the home of Mrs. Lavi Dickerson seven miles west of Terre Haute on the National Road. She leaves husband Bernard Dickerson. Funeral services were held Monday at Hunter's Chapel with burial in Highland Lawn Cemetery Terre Haute.
European dispatches report Britain France and Italy ready to try and punish the ex Kaiser but will wait for President Wilson to decide. The commentary implies Wilson may halt harsher action with a lenient warning.
Wesley D. Eaton longtime resident died Friday from influenza at age 68 years and ten months. Funeral services were conducted Monday by Rev. P. R. Poppers. He is survived by his wife and one step son.
Three more deaths from influenza occurred in the past week and many new cases are reported. Officials warn there is no probability of check without quarantine efforts. City schools will remain closed all week.
Two Clark county farm boys won the husking title on the Depew farm near Dana Indiana. Philip Weir of Martinsville husked 141 bushels and 20 pounds in eight hours. Fred Reece of Marshall recorded 73 bushels 50 pounds in four hours.
Marion Frantz aged 46 died Sunday at the Charleston sanitarium after weeks of illness. He was born near Marshall, son of Rev. and Mrs. E. W. Frantz, and spent most of his life in that area. Survived by wife, four sons and two daughters. funeral services held at Hindsboro with Rev. Flannagan officiating.
