The Island in the Swamp Chapter Remnant of a Chase
Lieutenant Knox travels from Rock Island to St Louis on the Warrior and meets Judge Beaucaire and Kirby the gambler. Knox soon learns of Eloise Beaucaire and Rene, Beaucaire’s granddaughter, while Kirby schemes to control the plantation and its slaves. Knox and Eloise escape to a swamp island, hide from Kirby, and plan a route north while seeking aid from Abel Shrunk and Pete the free man.
