Final preparations are underway for the Clark County Fair at Marshall to begin Monday August 5 and run through the week. A new hog barn 272 feet by 51 feet is near completion. Tents are rising, horses are arriving, and the 1956 fair promises daily programs including racing and a Grand Ole Opry finale Saturday.
Judge Robert Cotton presided in Marshall Friday last over cases including Lois Decker versus Metropolitan Life Insurance Co dismissed. Quiet title action Marvin R Elder et al versus Thomas H Bartholomew defaulted with decree. Seaton ordered to pay 412.21 in Chas Kirchner Son v Seaton. Moore and Gordon Moore vs Fred Renner dismissed.
Mr. and Mrs. Gustave Ritter and Mr. and Mrs. Jerome H. Millhouse leave Sunday August Sth for Brunswick Maine to visit Mr. and Mrs. David R. Nash and David Allen. They also plan to visit Mrs. H Glen Ritter Jr and children at Katherine de Nazario's beach house in Newburyport Massachusetts.
At an adjourned meeting of the Marshall Chamber of Commerce the board elected James H. Claypool secretary treasurer for the current year effective August 1. The group suggested members close their businesses August 8 and 9 for the Clark County Fair.
County Judge and Mrs. John M. Hollenbeck returned Wednesday afternoon from a several days vacation spent in northern Wisconsin and the upper peninsula of Michigan. Mrs. Myrtle Terrill and daughter Ann of Roanoke, Virginia, formerly of Marshall, visited with them and returned for a few days visit in Marshall.
Mrs L O Phillippe, in Marshall to recuperate, came home Sunday with her daughter Mary who underwent major surgery at Grant Hospital in Chicago. Mr and Mrs John Phillippe stayed with L O Phillippe during the stay.
H. D. Tucker, a telegraph operator for the New York Central, retired August 1 after 46 years of service.
The court docket lists Thelma Monk versus Paul Monk for divorce and Margaret Dill versus Wm Dill for divorce. Casey New Industries, Inc. sues Conrad Zimmermann as treasurer and ex officio county collector in an injunction action.
A birthday dinner honoring John L. Sanders is planned for next Sunday August 5 at the home of his grandson Gerald Smith and family east of Oliver.
Mr and Mrs Arthur Tarman of Martinsville have been living in Sawyer Michigan this summer while Mr Tarman was ill He is still ill and is being brought to Union Hospital Terre Haute for treatment
The Linger Longer club met Tuesday night with Wanda Lee Veach. Members present included Maxine Volk Lorene Garwood Jane Finkbiner Virgie Pearce Mary Lou Taylor Sue Staggs Charlotte Coleman Della Payne Clara Mae Anacker Lucille Pennington. Guests were Mary Harper and Yvonne Wallace. Prizes were won by Mrs Volk Mrs Garwood Mrs Finkbiner and Mrs Veach.
The Triple-T 4-H club met at Gerald Robinson’s home on July 24 with President June Norton presiding. Linda Etcinson read minutes. Linda Carol Ann Etcinson Garvin Max Manhart Don Stanfield David Miler Donnie Kibler and Gerald Robinson spoke. Carolyn McConchie was elected 4-H Queen. refreshments served to members and twenty-nine guests.
The annual Carpenter reunion took place July 22 in the Marshall scout building with around ninety people attending. After a noon dinner, attendees visited, sang, and listened to readings, and Lawrence Carpenter showed moving pictures. The next gathering is planned for 1957 at the same location and is open to all.
Rev and Mrs Louis T Miller will vacation near Rockford Illinois at a Fox River cottage. They will attend the Miller reunion in Iowa and a minister retreat at Knox College Galesburg during their trip.
M/Sgt Clyde McKern U S Army recruiter will be in Marshall on the 7th of August to answer questions about enlistment programs. Those seeking information may contact McKern at the Court House or Sheriff's Office between 10:00 and 11:00 a m.
The Boy Scouts of the Wabash Valley Council wrap six weeks of camping at Camp Krietenstein with 678 scouts registered. An executive board inspection earned a high rating, and ceremonies highlighted badge awards and Order of the Arrow honors among Marshall troop participants.
A compilation of 1956 warranty deeds and quit claim transfers, detailing property conveyances in Marshall and Casey. Notable entries include Frank L Archer receiving north half lot 1, block 18, with $1. Clifford E. Grable aged 38 and Ruby L. Green aged 33, both of Indianapolis, obtained marriage licenses. The filings list them as the couple seeking formal union in Indiana.
The Marshall State Bank purchased the building at 5 500 from Lovina Jones of Indianapolis. Barn raisings occurred in Melrose and Anderson townships with 41 men attending. Marriage licenses issued to Ora Cline and Madge Craig, Otto Davis and Iona Barbee, Grover Hartman and Jessie Mumford, Arthur Henley and Edith Maring. First home grown watermelons marketed by John Blair at West Union, price 20 to 25 cents. Gas mains planned for Marshall with connection by October 15.
Forty years ago in 1916 marriage licenses were issued to Albert Ashley and Laura Gossett and to R P Dean and Margaret Hartje both of Casey. Street paving lags due to slow brick shipments though West Main street brick is set to begin. excavation nears completion. Dr Foster of the state health board checked a suspected infantile paralysis case at John Finkbiner’s in Wabash township. Stanley Scott reports a buggy robbery near West Union. The Ford Model T car sold for 645 dollars. One farmer had ten horses at work in the hay field last Saturday.
Thirty years ago in 1926 Everett Taubeneck of the J I Case Threshing Machine Co. lauded a newly set up combine on Raymond Sackler land east of Marshall. Albert Wright secured Parkoff wheat seed via Worth W Merritt and harvested 58 percent yield from limed clay ground with sweet clover turned under. Married couples listed include Frederick Flood and Fannie Viahek, Carl Staley and Annabel Felkamp, Lewis Hutchens and Rosa Brown, plus Wm Tingley and Rhoda Mills.
Twenty years earlier Paul Crumlin and Miss Helen Craig both of West Union wed at the home of Eld. T J Wheeler near Robinson on July 21 1936. Licenses issued include James Marley McCabe 39 Dennison Illinois and Lee Hendrickson 29 Peoria Illinois. Janet Imle six daughter of Mr and Mrs Herman Imle south of Marshall was struck by a car July 28 and died the same day at Paris Hospital. Mrs John W Mitchell died at her York township home in July.
Ten years ago in 1946 Ivan Veach was named superintendent of old age assistance for Clark County on July 30. Marriage licenses issued include Harvey A. Turner and Helen E. Owen, both of Marshall, and Fenton R. Quinn with Dorothy Weaver of Dennison. New arrivals report sons for Nicholson, Lewis, and Wailer families. An engagement is announced for L. V. Smith’s Marshall household.
Co. C. Seabury of 507 Chestnut Street Marshall has accepted an appointment as mathematics instructor at Denison University Granville Ohio effective Sept 1 He is a retired naval officer with degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the U S Naval Academy.
Nadine Gamm of Marshall returns from a July Lake Bloomington training as Illinois Future Homemakers elects Faye Pritts of Bethany as president for the coming year. State officers include Lois Stokes Paso, Kay Hunley Auburn, Sue Lockard Cobden, Sue Bradley Ridgway, Ellen Tharp Farmer City, Jo Ella Masterson Forreston, Betty Lichtenwalter New Lenox, Janet Neumann Cambridge, and Edith Greenwell state mother of Casey. The Springfield adviser is Louise Lemmon.
The Sunshine Club met at Helen Hurst's home on Wednesday the 25th for a pot luck lunch. Afternoon activities included singing Sunshine in the Soul, Lord's Prayer, minutes, a 75 cent collection, letters to absent members, readings by Addie Hurst Gertie Scott and Helen Hurst, and a benediction by Helen Hurst. Attendees and guests included Ella Birchfield Mattie Hurst Josie Montgomery Elizabeth Ferris Gertie Scott Hattie Hurst Ellen Shonk Addie Hurst Della Bohn Edith Wilson Rosa Bohn Stephen Akers Ed Shonk Lawrence Scott Bill Lehman and hostess Helen.
Mrs C R McNary and Mrs Raymond Reedy hosted a farewell dinner for sister Mrs Mildred Cribelar at her Cloone home before her move to 812 North Eighth Street Marshall.
