F M Hurst reports Chicago summers cool with few hot days and crowded golf links. He notes unemployment, rising rents, and a flood of new apartment buildings while observing costs and living conditions in the city.
A special city council meeting reconsidered and withdrew the permit to build a filling station on the West side of the square in front of Clay pool property. The permit was issued to Emanuel Claypool and later transferred to O H air. Meehling Honderich objected to the arrangement. Davison Metz Howell and Scholfield voted to withdraw the permit.
The city school board met Friday evening and hired Miss Helen Strockbine of Casey to fill the vacancy created by Geneva Stevens resignation. Miss Mary Washburn was appointed principal and Miss Winona Hughes was confirmed as music teacher for the north side school.
The Old York reunion also called the old settlers' reunion will be held August 7 8 9 this year. It has always been a big event with large crowds and an excellent program featuring good speakers and entertaining activities.
Real estate transfers list multiple deeds including Robt Smitley to Ray Spittler and others, with parcels in Martinsville Marshall Casey and surrounding areas. Transfers involve $1 to $1000, various owners and parcels. includes a birthday celebration recount and social notices for local gatherings and visitors from Terre Haute Gary Akron and Union areas.
Clark county this week hosts a Salvation Army home service drive aiming for a 1800 quota with tagging teams from local communities. Casey and Martinsville, Westfield, and West Union leaders organize efforts, with Camp Fire girls and American Legion volunteers ready for Saturday tagging. Elwin Geisert suffered arm injuries when a hog attack occurred south of Marshall, another child escaped harm.
Bruce Clapp of Clarksville was kicked in the face by a horse Monday as he rode in a buggy toward Marshall. Reins tangled with the horse's tail, and after he straightened them a large gash on his left cheek required four stitches and there were two gashes over his eye at Dr. C D Mitchell's office.
The LO O F and Rebekah annual picnic will be held at the Cumberland County Fair Grounds in Greenup on Sunday. Music will be provided by the Greenup Concert Band. Addresses for the day will be given by Mrs. Alice TM M. Trees and A. L. Yantis.
The annual Redman Bennett family reunion will be held at the old Redman homestead in Edgard county on Sunday August 10. Activities include stories by elders a family history sketch dating back over a thousand years and music and games.
A list of couples obtaining marriage licenses includes Buford Evans Walden 32 Terre Haute with Alban Gertrude Daugherty 24 Terre Haute and Otto Nation 23 Charleston with Sarah Kaufman 24 Charleston among many others from Terre Haute Clinton Danville Linton and Ashmore.
Shawnee Morning News editor Spaulding stayed a night at Marshall Park last week. Clinton county couple Bernard Hopkins and Viola Richards wed by Squire Craig in his office in Linton Indiana. A Sunday birthday gathering at Mrs J W B Hutchings home drew about 97 relatives and friends with a long noon table under the yard trees.
This week in county court J B Wilson was arrested for passing a bad check and held on $1000 bond until September term. J Webber faced an intoxicated driving charge with $1000 bond set. Scott Figg was jailed on liquor possession with $1000 bond. Edward C Gurthery was jailed for non support.
J W Knox receives a letter from his brother in Bryn Mawr Washington dated July 14 1924 recounting June travel through Minnesota and the Dakotas with rain drought and heat in Washington and Oregon describes irrigation orchards alfalfa and fruit crops in the west notes Seattle markets and battleships in Puget Sound mentions fires in California and Oregon reports Lena’s auto accident and local land prices and asks for weather and crop news even as he misses Eastern papers and asks for a brief update.
Word received here of the death of Mrs. G. R. Powell wife of Rev. G. R. Powell who conducted a revival in Marshall several years ago at the Methodist church. They reside at Hartford City Indiana.
Miss Maude Murphy, attending summer school at the University of Illinois, was taken ill and the university physician forbade further study. She is now under the care of a specialist in Marshall Illinois as reported by the Terre Haute Star.
The Marshall churches Union service will be held at the Congregational church Sunday at 7 30 Rev J E Evans of the Methodist church will deliver a talk titled Thrills. Hargqid Arney and Murray Newberry of Island Grove attended a show at the Liberty theatre in Terre Haute.
At Marshall city hall an open meeting heard vigorous protest on the south side sewer and pedestal lighting plan. Speakers claimed the sewer would be a burden while supporters urged lighting as a must for the city. committee sent the sewer and lighting proposals to the city council with a split funding change. The council meets Monday August 4 to act.
Elmer Brown age 26 of Dennison and Mary Bowles age 20 of Terre Haute secured a marriage license in Paris on Tuesday. Randall plans to establish a flour and feed store in an empty building on the west side of the square formerly occupied by the Perisho grocery.
E. L. Clark of Camp Walton Florida, brother of Marshall resident T. W. F. Clark, is praised as a newspaper agent. The Birmingham News notes his agency began two years ago with five copies daily and Sunday, now 17 daily and 20 Sunday, with fluctuations but growing circulation as Birmingham visitors increase.
