IRS Rules on Gifts of Livestock and Farm Products
Commissioner clarifies 1955 rulings on charitable gifts of livestock or crops. No income tax on market value of gifts to charity. deduction allowed for fair market value, but production costs cannot be deducted and prior-year costs must be subtracted to avoid double deduction. Consider gifting appreciated property for full charitable deduction.

Payment of a Charitable Pledge with Agricultural Products
It now seems certain that the same one also applies to the payment of a charitable pledge with property that has appreciated in value. There is no tax on the gain, and the charitable deduction is taken in the year the property is transferred to pay the pledge.
Gifts of Agricultural Products to Anyone
A farmer may gift livestock or farm produce without including market value in gross income following two court rulings. Land with unharvested wheat can be given to children with no parental taxable income, and cattle given to a daughter similarly. Tax basis for recipients equals the parents’ cost basis, and farmer costs on gifts are deductible.
Mind Your Home Lighting P s and Q s
Agricultural engineer K M Peart warns poor lighting causes eyestrain and accidents. He notes bigger bulbs or fluorescents increase light per watt. 100 watt gives more light than four 25s and fluorescents yield more light per watt but fixtures cost more. Quality lighting means soft uniform light with little glare. CLM lamps assure high quality by certification.
