Berniece Aden of St. Joseph in Champaign county and James L. Mueller of Taylor Ridge in Rock Island county win Danforth Camp scholarships as Illinois 4-H members. They will spend two weeks in August at Camp Miniwanca Michigan for leadership training and outdoor life. The Danforth Foundation funds the award. Both were chosen by the University of Illinois College of Agriculture staff from over 65,000 Illinois 4-H members for leadership, scholarship and character. Berniece has a decade in club work with extensive sewing, food and home projects and seven years as a junior club leader. James is a 10-year 4-H member and a University of Illinois sophomore with projects in swine, beef, poultry, crops and crafts. He has attended Junior Leadership Conference and National 4-H Club Congress as a national winner.
A staff summary from the University of Illinois Dixon Springs Experiment Station notes calving is advancing with about 300 planned calves. Oakley Robinson, the station herdsman, describes daily checks including tattooing dehorning and castration. He prioritizes early dehorning for identification and easier handling, using hair patches to mark completed calves.
Clarence Albritton of Johnson County reports calf crops already on the ground. Station superintendent Bob Webb notes February and March calves wean 80 pounds heavier than May calves under identical feeding and management. An early calving bonus of 80 pounds per calf is considered worthwhile.
Mrs Abner Field of Pope County asks about fly control for cattle. Doc Mansfield explains a burlap wrapped cable hung between a tree and ground to allow cattle to pass under over and around. Burlap soaked in DDT or methoxychlor with fuel oil is effective and must be refreshed every two weeks.
Lee Gard, Station researcher, reports mulch corn yields 66 bushels per acre from 8 ton mulch versus 52 bushels without mulch. Mulching also cut soil loss from 5 tons to ½ ton per acre. Further study aims to grow mulch on plots to simplify the process.
Illinois joined the American Tree Farm system as the 39th state. Members own private taxpaying forest farms and harvest repeated forest crops, with 26 tree farms identified across 21 counties. Membership requires owning over 10 acres of native timber or at least 3 acres of planted woodland and proving proper timber management.

Mr and Mrs Ned Welsh and Fos toria Ohio visited Celia Dodd in Melrose on Wednesday. They spent Thursday with Lan caster Redmond. Saturday they visited Wayne Welsh at Robinson and joined Mr and Mrs Wayne Baker for Friday supper with her parents Herman Pat chett and Harold Washburn in Martinsville.
Charles F Carpenter, Secretary of State, notes improved state highways permit higher speeds for Illinois motorists while maintaining safe limits. Drivers on open four lane roads may travel faster if conditions allow, but two lane roads require lower speeds. Braking distance and passing safety depend on multiple factors, and motorists must judge safe speeds to protect lives.

Mr and Mrs Omer Powell and sons near Hutsonville visited with Mr and Mrs Harold Graham and family. Art Graham visited Sunday afternoon with Mr and Mrs Shelton and family. Ned Welsh Mrs Celia Dodd Miss Mable Dodd Mr and Mrs Lancaster Redmond Ward Redmond and Mr and Mrs Wayne Welsh spent Sunday with Mr and Mrs Frances Welsh at Spencer Indiana.
