Youngstown Ohio December 20 Judge David G Jenkins voided the 1 billion dollar merger between Youngstown Sheet & Tube and Bethlehem Steel Corp. Cyrus Eaton opposed the consolidation claiming fraud and potential losses to stockholders. Pro-merger plans to appeal, possibly to the U S Supreme Court.
The funeral of Dr. Emory J. Marshall was held at 2 30 PM Sunday from his west Michigan Avenue home. A large gathering of relatives and friends attended to honor a community figure of more than fifty years. Rev James M Horton officiated using Episcopal rites and scripture with prayers and a poem. Interment followed in the family plot with Horton giving the committal service. Honorary pallbearers included Rev George H Ward and others. active pallbearers were Judge Blaine W Hatch and several local men. Attendees included residents from Lansing Battle Creek Kalamazoo Belleville and nearby towns.
The North Dakota old capitol in Bismarck burned Sunday leaving lawmakers homeless and forcing temporary quarters as officials rush an emergency plan. Governor Shafer promised an immediate call for an emergency appropriation to fund a new capitol, with the legislature to convene January 6. The four story brick building, a showpiece since its early Northwest construction, burned from a roof blaze on the fourth floor as firemen saved few records.
In Detroit Michigan on December 20, the name of Voorhies attorney and five assistants was announced marking the complete staff of his office. The report notes the slate includes Paul W Voorhies and other named assistants.
United Press reports President Hoover opposes a plan to pay cash compensation to World War I veterans. Senator Vandenberg favors a compromise allowing veterans to borrow the present value of their life insurance certificates, potentially increasing loan values from about 50 to 80 percent. The proposal, once championed by Vandenberg, is under consideration as momentum builds in Congress.
Treasury figures show over ten thousand tax refunds totaling 126,836.33 across corporations. United States Steel leads with 15,208,343 in refunds, Chicago meat packers receive 7,068,922, and John D. Rockefeller gets 648,406. Henry Ford’s share is 46,000, while Dodge estates top individual payouts at 979,015 and 782,875 respectively. Governor Green granted a full pardon to Lloyd Prevost stemming from the Mount Clemens death of Brown, a wealthy friend. Commissioner Richard W. Pardons cited miscarriages of justice and Prevost’s innocence after years of alleged coercion and high pressure tactics during the 1919 trial.
A federal warrant charging violation of the Mann act was issued today by U S Commissioner Joseph H Dunnebacke for the arrest of Wendell Pryor 19 of Indianapolis Ind who was taken into custody here Saturday with Marion Barnes 18 also of Indianapolis Pryor already sits in jail but will be formally arrested under the federal warrant by a deputy U S marshal in Lansing.
A youthful gunman robbed the Paramount motion picture theater in Times Square early today, escaping with at least $11,000 as a midnight Tom Sawyer show continued inside. Police scoured the skyscraper with guards on roofs while audiences were held inside during the search.
United Press reports a year end stock decline led by weak special issues and a broad pullback after the injunction blocks the Youngstown Bethlehem Steel merger. Wheat slid to a 34 year low, while United States Steel and other major names dropped. Call money rose as year end financing pressures grew.
In Salem Indiana a renewed feud between the Spurlock and Gibson families sparked a violent roundup. Patton Gibson was killed two weeks ago, others captured or wounded, and Sheriff Milton and deputies were among the injured. John and Cleag Spurlock face murder charges as four Gibson brothers, Otis, Gilfred, Dan and Alonzo, renewed the conflict causing townwide alarm. Concluded on Page 2.
Senator Gerald P Nye arrived in Florida with a congressional delegation to inspect a government sanctuary site and defended the Republican National Committee special fund. Nye said the fund’s use for loans suggests slush purposes and refused to apologize for calling it a slush fund despite Joseph R Null’s call for an apology.
DETROIT Mich Dec 29 UF Howell Hooten 28 a student flier was fatally injured and instructor Gerald Francis escaped with facial lacerations when their airplane crashed at a field near Detroit Witnesses said the plane at about landing altitude nosedived to earth Hooten died two hours after the crash at Mt Clemens hospital Francis was treated and discharged from Highland Park General Hospital
Washington December 29 The editor of the Christian Herald Stanley High says the prohibition cause lacks leadership and needs laymen to take control. He notes forty Republican congressmen wavering and warns of possible defections in the next four years as dry leaders discuss changing roles from professionals to lay figures.
A Lake Superior disturbance brings snow to northern Michigan with clouds across the southern Great Lakes. Light snow is expected this afternoon and tonight as a strong northwest wind shortens temperatures. Colder air moves in tonight and Tuesday with widespread conditions across the western half of the country and scattered rain in the east. Sunset is 5 11 and sunrise 8 09 tomorrow.
